James

Damn it! She checked her watch. It was already after nine, and she was supposed to meet the mystery man at noon.

James was going to kill her for not telling him, but there was nothing she could do about it now. He was in court.

He had his job to do, and she had hers.

However, the entire time she showered and dressed she couldn’t ignore the pit in her stomach that told her he wasn’t going to see it that way.

“Peace offering.” Cami offered Madison a smile as she set the coffee carrier on the reception desk. She hid her frown. Madison looked even more exhausted than the last time she’d seen her.

“Are you two fighting?” Gerry looked between them as he pulled his coffee from the holder.

“No, Cam is just being stubborn.”

“What’s new?” Gerry quipped.

Cami’s phone buzzed again, and she glanced down.

James: Court wrapped early. Sick juror so my schedule opened up today. Do you want to get lunch and brainstorm next steps?

Cami scanned the words. This was her chance. Tell him to come out and go with her to the meeting.

“What’s that face? Did something else happen?”

“Yes, something good this time.”

Madison’s eyebrows lifted.

“Whoever broke into my house and took the file returned it yesterday with a note saying they have evidence in Amy’s case.”

Madison’s jaw fell open, and Gerry let out a low whistle. Cami’s phone buzzed again, but she didn’t bother to look. “I’m meeting him at noon.”

Madison’s face fell. “Cami?—”

“No worries.” She forced a smile. “I’m not asking you to go. You were clear. If I move forward with this, I’m doing it solo.”

Madison’s blue eyes filled with tears, and she worried her lip. “I know I’m being selfish?—”

“You’re not,” Cami said firmly. “Your priority has to be Jax and his safety.” She pulled her friend into a hug. “We are fine. I promise.”

Madison sniffed. “I am a terrible friend.”

“Not even a little bit. You are an excellent mother, and like you said, I’m stubborn. Even James thinks I should drop it.”

As if saying his name summoned him, her phone buzzed again.

“Is he going with you?” Gerry asked.

Cami avoided making eye contact, taking a long sip of her sugary latte. “I didn’t tell him about it.”

“What! Why not?” Madison glared at her. “You can’t go alone. You don’t know who this is, and they’ve already broken into your house once!”

“James is busy. He can’t run out to save me every time something comes up. I’m meeting this person in a very public place. I’ll be fine.”

“This is a terrible idea.” Gerry scowled at her. When the phone rang, Cami took a step toward her office.

“I’ll take precautions, and I have my taser just in case.”
