The hairs on the back of James’s neck rose. “You think Courtney and Chris were involved before my father’s death?”

Vincent’s lip curled. “She was definitely seeing someone. Chances are it’s the same man she was with a few months later.” He shook his head. “I remember Chris as a young man at the house when Declan lived there.” His chin jut forward. “Declan’s on the warpath, I hear. Let me know if there is some way I can help.”

“I don’t know how we’ll ever be able to prove in a court of law who was responsible.”

The chuckle Vincent emitted was devoid of humor. “I doubt that will be a problem for Declan.”

Neither did James.

“Do you know what Courtney did with Mr. Bloom’s remains?” Cami asked.

Vincent’s eyes widened at the change of subject, but James instantly realized where her thoughts had gone.

“Last I saw, they were in an urn on the mantel of Mr. Bloom’s study.” He stood again. “I need to go. I will bring the necklace to your offices tomorrow.”

Cami nodded.

Vincent took a few steps away and then turned back. “The little peanut is married, huh?”

James smiled. The burly head of security had always had a soft spot for Cara. “She is. He’s a good guy.” Vincent’s face softened, a genuine smile curving his mouth before it settled into hard lines.

“Tell Declan for what it’s worth… I’m sorry for the role I played. I don’t know how much help it will be, but I can give you the identity I set up for the escort that survived the accident. I’ll bring it tomorrow with the necklace.”

James nodded and waited until Vincent Menardi was out of sight before he offered his hand to Cami.

She blew out a loud exhale. “Well! That was a lot. I can’t wait to tell Mark.”

“Don’t get too excited,” James warned. “Even if Vincent is willing to testify, which I highly doubt. It’s been so long, and he never spoke up... a decent defense attorney will try to suppress the necklace from coming into evidence.”

“I understand, but it tells me I’m pursuing the right person.”

James looked down into her hopeful face. He didn’t have the heart to tell her that with the team Matt could afford, without direct evidence or a confession, it was unlikely he would ever be arrested, much less convicted, of Amy’s murder.

“You’ve known Vincent Menardi a long time?” Cami asked, as he pulled into a parking spot in front of her offices. “I can trust that he’ll bring the necklace?”

“If Vincent said he would, he will.”

Cami swung her door open and paused. “So now that we know he was the intruder, I guess there’s no reason I can’t go back to my house.”

“Brady needs another night to work on the system.” It was absolutely a lie. Brady had sent him an email that morning, informing him the system was almost ready.

A tiny frown formed between her eyebrows. “We know it was Vincent Menardi.”

His gaze caught hers and held it. “I want you to stay.”

A sweet smile crossed her face, and her eyes gleamed. “Okay, then I will. Madison and I have a meeting with Kip and Kevin this afternoon to finally sign the papers, but I'll finish early.

“I’ll have something brought in for dinner.”

“That sounds nice.” Her tongue peeked out to slide along her lower lip, and his body instantly reacted, but her phone rang, ruining the moment. “Oh, that’s Mark.” She looked at the illuminated screen. “I need to update him on what we’ve learned.”

James did his best not to scowl. “Of course. See you tonight.”

He watched as she entered the glass doors, stopping to give him a little wave along with one of her beautiful smiles.

James wanted to take her back to the hotel now and spend the rest of the afternoon in bed, but he knew she needed to work. He frowned. And he needed to let his family know that Vincent Menardi had finally surfaced.

When Cami still wasn’t answering her phone at six-thirty, James began pacing the hotel suite. There was no reason to worry. She might have been held up at work, or lost track of time... or someone else might have been watching her. Just as he was considering searching for Madison’s phone number, a text came in.
