Cami’s eyebrow arched. “I can’t? This is my job, James. This is our best shot at nailing Matt for Amy’s murder.”

“You promised?—”

“I’ll go with her,” Luke interjected.

“We both will,” Dahlia added. “It’s not likely Matt will talk to Cami, anyway. Isn’t he threatening to sue you? I’m better bait.”

“Could you not think of any other word?” Luke glared at her, and she rolled her eyes.

She patted his chest. “Don’t be dramatic.”

James was still shaking his head. “I don’t like it. We’ll find another way.”

Cami held his gaze. “The longer this goes on, the more time he has to protect himself. My episode went out this morning about the new evidence being found. We need to strike while he’s rattled.” She looked over her shoulder at Dahlia. “And who knows, maybe if Matt is busy with Dahlia, that will give me a window to talk to Trey and show him our evidence. Without his alibi, the police could bring Matt in for questioning.”

James argued fiercely, but after Luke promised not to let Cami out of his sight, he finally capitulated.

“I’m just going home to get my dress, but I’ll meet you back here?” Dahlia and Luke nodded. “I’ll be safe. Promise.” She pressed a kiss to James’s lips, before whispering so only he could hear. “Because the next time I tell you I love you, you better remember.”

She danced away as his hands reached for her.

Cami chose her dress for the evening carefully. She needed to look as if she belonged at the black-tie event but not standout, so that someone might catch her snagging a glass from Matt. She finally decided on a long, black gown that she’d only worn once to a friend’s holiday party. The fabric ruched over one shoulder, and had a high slit up the leg which, if necessary, would allow her to run. Unfortunately, there was no way she could carry a tiny evening bag. She needed something large enough that she could slip her ‘evidence’ in without being obvious.

Cami tugged her overcoat tighter over her shoulders as she locked her car in the hotel parking lot. Already slightly on edge over what to expect, she blurted out the first thing that popped in her mind when the door to James’s suite opened.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

James lifted a dark brow at her and pretended to adjust the sleeves on a tuxedo, clearly tailored to fit him perfectly.

“What’s the matter, Tig? Don’t you like it?”

Cami scowled at him as she shrugged out of her coat. If she weren’t so annoyed that he was out of bed, she could admire how devastatingly handsome he was. Seriously, what was it about men in tuxes?

“You aren’t going.” Her chin jutted forward, but the argument she expected didn’t come. James stared at her, his gaze traveling from her head to her heels and back again. Warmth spread through her veins at his heated perusal.

“You look gorgeous.”

Cami’s cheeks heated at the fervent tone. “You don’t look so bad yourself,” she said before she remembered. “But you aren’t going. We already agreed.”

James shrugged one shoulder. “I napped and took some more ibuprofen. I’m fine.”

“You. Were. Stabbed.”

“Superficial. I feel fine.”

Cami rolled her eyes, prepared to argue, when a knock at the door signaled that Luke and Dahlia had arrived.

“Can you please explain to him why he can’t go?” Cami insisted.

James’s jaw hardened when his brother hesitated. “I’m not a child. I know my limitations.”

“Since when?” Luke muttered, but then continued louder. “He might be incredibly stubborn, but James isn’t stupid. If he thought he was too injured to go, he wouldn’t.”

Cami gaped at him, and James smirked back before Luke added, “Mainly because he’d hate to embarrass himself by passing out again.”

“I never passed out,” James glared daggers at his twin. “I was sedated.”

Luke opened his mouth to retort, but Dahlia placed her hand on his sleeve. “Enough. Both of you.” Then she turned a sympathetic look on Cami. “You won’t win this one, I’m afraid. I think being stubbornly protective is tattooed on their DNA. Speaking of, let’s get this ov?—”
