“So, no charges for you? What about Justin?”
“Assault with a deadly weapon.”
He studied her face. She had remained friends with Justin for over a decade. He had to imagine she had mixed feelings.
“I hope they lock him up forever,” she said fiercely.
He chuckled. “Not forever, but for a long time.”
Cami reached behind her to unzip her dress. “Are we done talking yet?”
“Oh yeah. Definitely done talking.”
Her forehead puckered. “What about your?—”
“I’ll be creative.”
The next morning, they slept late, ordering up room service and staying in bed.
“Declan says his lab will have the results by this afternoon,” James said.
“That's fast. I'll call Mark as soon as we get the report and let him know.” She snuggled closer under his good arm. “It’s hard to believe this might be it. Do you think the police will wait until after Thanksgiving to bring him in?”
James chuckled, his hand lazily stroking her hair. “I don’t think the holiday will play a big role. That’s not how it works.” His hand paused. “What do you eat at Thanksgiving if you don’t eat meat?”
Cami shoved at him lightly, careful not to jostle the bandage on his ribs. “Vegetables? Fish?”
James closed his eyes, a smile on his face. “I’ll have to be sure those are on the menu, then.”
“Does our arrangement include holidays?” Cami’s tone was light, but he could hear the vulnerability underneath.
He turned his head, and forced her to meet his eyes. “I meant what I said in the hospital. I love you, and I never plan on letting you go again.”
Her cheeks turned an adorable rose color. “I didn’t think you remembered. So, to be clear, the expiration date on our relationship…”
He groaned even as he pulled her tighter. “There is no expiration date, Tig. You’re stuck with me.” His expression grew serious. “We wasted so much time. I don’t want to spend another day without you.” Cami’s eyes gleamed. “That was supposed to be good news, not make you cry.”
“I’m just happy.” She turned and raised her hands to frame his face. “I love you, James Bloom. My brain is just having a hard time processing that this is real.”
His heart swelled as she flopped onto her back and slung an arm across her eyes. “We should probably turn our phones back on at some point.”
“That's a terrible idea.” He objected when she rose to a sitting position and handed him his phone while scrolling through hers.
“Cara!” James frowned as he read through the group text thread with his siblings.
“That doesn’t sound promising.”
“My mother is insisting we have lunch at her house today.” He groaned. “Command performance. I guess Dahlia told Cara about last night already, and she told my mom. Damn it. Two sisters are way worse than one.”
“It’s understandable she’d be concerned. You were stabbed two nights ago.”
He caught her around the waist and pulled her back down, her finger coming up to trace the symbols on his abs. “I had other plans for the day.”
Cami pressed a kiss to his pec, and he sucked in a breath as her hand skated lower. “I need to leave within the next hour, anyway.”
“What?” He caught her hand before it could explore lower. “Aren’t you coming to lunch? Did my family scare you off last time? God knows they scare me.”
Cami laughed. “Your family is amazing. You don’t know how lucky you are to have such a large and loyal family. It’s Sunday. I'm supposed to bring my mom her groceries today.”
