Her eyes lit up. “You went to Japan? I’ve always wanted to go.”
“Among other places.”
“So, what did you eat there?”
“Shirako, Ika Sashimi… some other stuff.”
“What’s that?”
“Fish prostate and raw squid.”
James couldn’t control his grin when her jaw fell open.
A peal of laughter rang out bright and beautiful, her face lit with happiness. “I’m so proud of you!”
James opened the box containing the cake, to cover his smile. “I got some cake, just in case.”
Their eyes met, and a slow, warm smile stretched across her face from ear to ear.
“Well, if you insist.”
She picked up her fork, and with a slightly hesitant expression, she extended it toward him.
This was dangerous. All the reasons she’d captured his heart before displayed in front of him. The silence hung between them as she waited, utensil in the air. He picked up his and toasted her fork the way they had a hundred times before.
“Looks good,” he said gruffly, cutting off a piece.
Cami moaned around her bite, and his body tightened.
“This is amazing!”
Panic filled him. This was too much. Too close. Too intimate.
“When is this opening?”
She blinked at his abrupt change of subject. “Kip’s opening is the weekend after next. I think we should have a couple of public dates before then, so we aren’t awkward with all the cameras that will be there.”
James nodded.
“I have some interviews tomorrow in South Georgia, but I’ll be back in the evening. Can you meet me tomorrow night around seven? Will you be done with work by then?”
“I have court tomorrow, but I’ll be finished by four. I’ll pick you up.”
“You don’t need to do that. I live out in the suburbs.”
“I want to pick you up. It’s the right thing to do,” James added, when her eyes widened at his tone.
She considered him for a minute, and James did his best to keep his face blank. Cami finished the last bite of the cake and then pulled out her phone. His phone dinged an incoming message.
“I texted you my address. See you at seven.” Cami suddenly scooted her chair closer to his, lifted her phone again, and tilted her head close to his. Oranges and spice filled his nose even as she said, “Smile!” and snapped a picture.
“Don’t worry, I won’t make the caption too cheesy.” She scooped up her purse, but paused at the door to give him a smile over her shoulder. “Let me know if you want to get that contract notarized.”
Her laughing departure left James feeling upended. But that was Cami. She’d always made him feel upside down.
CHAPTER TWELVE
“You aren’t serious.” Justin looked horrified when he stopped by the Murder She Spoke offices the next day.
