Page 33 of Lucky In Love
We are getting to leave when there is a loud commotion at the doors. I watch as two large guys hit the floor. It doesn’t take me too long to assess the situation. As Xander, a Vitali guard, bleeds out on the ground next to me, I reach down and grab his unused gun. I flip off the safety and stand in front of my future in-laws.
I’m surprised when Anya’s blonde ass waltzes into the room, but I shouldn’t have been.
“Just the ugly bitch I wanted to see,” she says, shooting the other guard to my left. What is with these guys? They suck. I have to credit the Vitali women; not one screams, cowers, or hides.
“What do you want, Anya?”
“You ruined everything.”
“Meaning?”
“Luka was mine. I was going to be set for life.”
“You cleaned his toilets, baby girl. He did not want you.”
“He don’t want you either. He wanted an alliance with your father.” The women behind me laugh. She turns her gun on Nicola.
“Your feud is with me,” I say, stepping in front of Nicola.
“That’s right. With you dead, he’ll be mine.”
“You better not miss then,” I say, raising my gun toward her, my finger caressing the trigger like a long-lost lover.
When shots ring out a split second later, a searing pain tears through my chest, and then a shot and a second bullet hits my leg. I go down hard. Women start screaming all around me. My baby.
The baby that Luka doesn’t know about because I didn't tell him yet, and now I am going to die.
The last thing I remember, before everything turns black, is how everything is ruined as I watch the blood from my chest cascade down to meet the pool already gushing from my leg.
At least I fell in love…
Epilogue
Luka
Three Months Later
Irushed to the club after I got the call. I don’t remember who called me, but when I got there, there was so much blood. Someone called Doctor Bonetti. He comes wherever we need him. He keeps us from having to go to the hospital and the cops from asking pesky questions. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable. Like now, especially since Keira shot and killed Anya with Xander’s gun. The doc cleared the floor and began to save her. I had so little time with her. It wasn’t fair but I could only watch in awe. Eventually, the doctor moved her to the hospital, where he took her into surgery. Nic called my parents, and they met us at the hospital. Nic couldn’t stop crying. I finally had to call her mother to sit with us because my mom told me she deserved to know what was going on with her daughter. That’s not exactly how I wanted to meet them, but it didn’t start any wars like I thought it would. Nine hours later the doctor came out of the surgery to give me the news. I had prepared myself for the worst because there was so much blood.
“She’s resting and is going to be alright. Her baby is fine too. The heartbeat is strong, but she is only about six weeks along.” It is the best news I ever heard. I still have nightmares about losing her at least once a week.
“Baby?”
“Yes. Keira is pregnant.” I grinned for the first time all night at that.
She wakes when I jerk awake from my most recent nightmare.
“Luka, my love. Are you alright?” she asks rubbing her hands over my chest, instantly calming me.
“Yeah, vita mia. Are you?”
“I’m good. Just worried about you.” This woman is my absolute everything.
“Don’t be. Go back to sleep.”
“I’m wide awake now,” she says, her hand dipping down my stomach. I grab her wrist before she gets to my cock. I haven’t made love to her since she was shot.
“Are my scars hideous or something? Why won’t you touch me anymore?” she asks fearfully.
