“Your brother?” I whisper, shocked and confused. “But I saw him kiss you.”

“Your brother kissed you?” The doctor pipes in. She’s been so quiet, and the gears in my brain have been spinning a million revolutions per minute, I realize she’s still in the room.

“Wait a minute. My brother has never kissed me. Maybe on the cheek when we hug.” She tucks her hair behind her ear, then looks around the room like it holds all the answers. She freezes and spins back toward me. “Shit. Did you come to the bar the night after?”

“Yes.” I nod and fold my arms in a huff. “And I saw you in his arms.”

“And you thought I was his girlfriend.”

“Yea.”

“Oh honey. I always hug him. I’d just startled him, which he hates by the way, and hugged him to say hello. It’s just what we do.” Kiera half sits, half leans on the bed at my side and touches my leg under the blanket. “Just after that hug he told me about his woman he'd met the night before. He was in a bit of an uproar because when he tried to call you, all he got was a recording that your phone was disconnected, but he seemed besotted with you.”

“I didn’t realize my phone had been shut off until I woke up the next morning.” I start to explain, hoping she believes me. “My mom is a bit of a bitch and had kicked me out the week before, and her shutting off my phone was just icing on the shit cake of my week.”

“So you didn’t give him a bogus number on purpose?” she asks. “Because that’s what he thinks.”

“She would never do that,” Toni speaks up in my defense. “This whole situation sounds like a huge misunderstanding.”

“Well, do you want me to call him?” Kiera asks with a shrug.

“Can you please? I would owe you forever.”

Pulling her phone from her pocket, she laughs as she starts dialing. With the phone to her ear she whispers, “Name your first born after me and we’ll be even.”

Chapter 6

Declan

Ring ring. Buzz buzz. Ring ring. Buzz buzz. Ring ring. Buzz buzz.

“What the fu—” I shoot straight up in bed, confused as all hell. Fumbling for the nightstand, I grab my phone, stupid offending piece of technology, and look at the time.

Why the fuck is my sister calling me at five o’clock in the morning? Isn’t she supposed to be at work?

I swipe the screen to answer. “Someone better be dead.”

“Not quite, brother,” Kiera’s way too happy voice chirps on the other end. “Sorry for waking you, but I wanted to see if you’d join me for breakfast when I get my break in an hour. There’s something I need to talk to you about.’’

“You’re lucky I love you,” I throw back the covers and swing my legs over the side of the mattress, feet hitting the freezing cold floor. “‘cause you’re a pain in my arse.”

“I wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t important.”

“Can’t this wait ‘til I’ve gotten a few more hours of sleep? I closed the bar last night and just fell asleep two hours ago.”

“Sorry, but no. This is a bit time sensitive.”

“Fine,” I hear the grumpiness in my own voice, “but you’re paying.”

“I’ll meet you down by the E.R. doors.” She hangs up on me.

What the hell?

“Why are we up here?” I ask Kiera as she leads me off the elevator. I make it three steps before I read the sign on the wall and freeze where I’m standing. “Gynecology and Obstetrics? What a minute. Are you pregnant?”

“Nope.” Her chuckle is nervous, but she continues. “But someone else you know is and you need to see her. That’s really why I called you to come.”

“So I’m not going to get breakfast?” I grumble as I dig my palms into my eyes. “I need coffee to wake up my brain.”
