Chapter twenty-six

Kalina

The sound of my phone going off jerks me awake. I grab it from the bedside table and look at the screen. Mila’s name flashes across. I answer it, rubbing my eyes. “Mila? Everything is okay? It’s like,” I look over at the clock on Lenya’s table, “Three in the morning.” Lenya stirs next to me.

“My water broke. We are at the hospital. Please come, I need my friend. I’m scared, and Oleg and Ilya are not helping the situation.”

“Okay, we are leaving now. We will be there soon.” I shake Lenya’s shoulder, “Wake up, lyubov1. Mila is in labor and wants us at the hospital.”

He sits up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Isn’t she early?”

I look at him, shaking my head. “I don’t know. She is at least four weeks early. Let’s go,” We throw clothes on, and Lenya lets Alina know we are going to the hospital explaining that it’s not because of our baby. Once we are on the way, I text Mila, letting her know we are on the way.

She gave me the room details. Inside I am worried for her, for her baby. “Are you okay, Tsvetok2? You’re tense and I can feel it.” I look over at him. “Just a little worried about her and the baby. Wondering why? That’s all.”

Lenya shifts gears and then reaches for my hand. “It's going to be okay. Baby’s come early all the time. They equip hospitals to deal with many situations.”

We arrive at the hospital and park the car in the garage. We make our way to the front desk and inquire about where the labor and delivery department is. The administrator gives us directions and we head to the elevator. The doors to the L&D open and we see the twins standing at the nurses’ station.

“Where is Mila?” Oleg points to the room across from them. I turn and knock on the door. Mila sees me and holds her arms out. She already has an IV in and the nurse is administering something. “How are you doing?” I ask, wrapping my arms around her.

“I’ve been better. That’s for sure.” She lets out a pained laugh.

“They just gave me some medicine to help his lungs, since he is early. I'm already seven centimeters dilated, so they said they can’t stop it. I’m scared, Lina. What if there is something wrong?” I sit down on the bed and kiss the top of her head.
