“We’re from different worlds.”
“I can see that.” Zarafina touched the cards, staring at them intently. “The situation isn’t exactly what it seems, though. There will be misunderstandings.”
“Sounds like a normal Monday for me.” Makoa sighed.
“Things are definitely going to get weird.”
“I can handle weird.” Makoa was sure any romance involving mermaids would be a little different. “But can I defeat this bad person? The Devil.”
“He’s not really the devil. You aren't involved with Tetsuo Hojo, are you? That’s usually the card that comes up when he’s involved with something.”
Ugh, that faka was trouble and had been for a long time. Makoa made a face. Lately, though, he had been leaving the Palekaiko Beach Resort alone. But in the past, Tetsuo wanted nothing more than to see it fail. His nephew, Holt getting married had mellowed him out a bit. Nowadays Tetsuo spent most of his time harassing Holt and Joely about the family’s Upcountry ranch than worrying about the beach. "No."
“Or someone like him?”
“An organized crime boss?”
Zarafina shrugged. “The cards aren't clear.”
“Should I not see her again?” If Zarafina told him to stay away, he would. It would be hard and he would probably look for Ana’s pretty face in the waves all the rest of his life, but he would heed Zarafina’s advice.
Ten of Cups. Zarafina’s face brightened. “If you stick with it you will find happiness, joy, contentment.” She cocked her head at the card. “Pleasure and love.”
Makoa felt the tips of his ears burning in embarrassment.
“You will have a good family life.”
Maybe there would be another wedding soon. His and Ana's. Okay, he knew he was rushing things. She might even ghost him tomorrow. Still, it was nice to think that he could have a romantic future. They didn't have to walk down the aisle. They could have the ceremony in the ocean. He could wear a scuba suit instead of a tux. “So, she’s the one?” Makoa marveled.
Zarafina gave a half shrug. “You already know the answer. The cards just confirm what is in your path to happiness.”
“Thanks Z.” He leaned over the table and gave her a gruff hug. “Should I pay you?”
She held out her palm. “Ten dollars. The cards don’t talk cheap.”
Makoa gladly gave her the tips he got this morning.
