Page 1 of A Constant Reminder
Chapter 1 – Sam
“Sam baby, I need you to hold on.”
My ears heard the words, but my mind was having a hard time comprehending them. The only thing I could focus on was the searing pain ripping through my skull. It felt like a million knives stabbing me in constant unison.
What the fuck happened?
My thoughts were a jumbled mess, and I was having trouble piecing anything together. It was like trying to watch a home movie, but half of the footage missing.
The last thing I could remember was dinner with Tyler’s family. It went horribly after his mother made it known she wasn’t happy I was dating her son, so I left and took a ride share back to Boston.
A loud beeping noise cut through my thoughts, and I struggled to open my eyes. No matter how hard I tried to see something…anything…all I saw was darkness.
I lifted my hand attempting to reach out and touch anything to tell me where I was or what was happening. I was startled by a large hand grabbing mine and gently squeezing. The cool touch felt good against my sweaty palms.
Tyler.
“It’s okay, Kansas. I’ve got you. You’re going to be okay.” The deep voice warmed me from the inside out.
Tyler Wendell. The man who had one hundred percent stolen my heart. The man I was head-over-heels in love with. The man I felt damn lucky to call my own.
I knew unequivocally that he would never hurt me. Never. So, what the hell happened?
Other areas of my body began to radiate the same pain as my head every time I attempted to move the slightest bit, and every part of me felt like it weighed a hundred pounds, especially my eyelids which seemed to be glued shut.
Frantically, my mind searched my thoughts, trying to assemble together the blank spaces.
Okay, I remember getting back to the house. I was thinking of a surprise for Tyler….
I remembered walking in the house and seeing the large arrangement of flowers on the kitchen counter. Happiness flooded my thoughts I remembered reading the sweet note from Ty…until I flipped the card over.
There, I saw the word WHORE written on the back and saw all my beautiful flowers were destroyed.
Then…the footsteps. The smell of that strong cologne. And…that voice. The voice that chilled me to my very core.
Hello, Samantha.
Just thinking of the words sent shivers down my spine and made the bile in my throat rise.
Everything suddenly came flooding back as the beeping on the monitors began to quicken.
James. The attack. His hate. His anger.
Faster and faster, the machines rang.
Frantic voices filled my ears. “Her heartrate is off the charts. I’m sorry, Mr. Wendell, but we’re going to have to sedate her.”
A sudden prick in my arm made me cry out in pain although I’m not sure if any actual noise escaped my mouth. It felt like I had no control of my body, and I began panicking even more.
I struggled to move. Tried like hell to open my eyes or yell about what I was feeling.
Nothing. All I could feel was something warm running through my veins as if an invisible blanket was being draped over me.
Then…there was only sleep.
