He wanted to show her their new home. Knowing that she would soon live there, Niev did want to explore. “It sounds like we have plans for tomorrow.”
“Niev, are you sure?”
“I assure you, Ann, I’ll take great care of her. We’ll go slow and take lots of breaks.”
Ann didn’t seem to agree but nodded anyway. She probably didn’t want to rise against her beta.
“Can we meet up a little later this time so I can sleep in? Maybe nine?”
“Of course. I’ll meet you and Blake here at nine.” With that, he turned and walked away.
Ann didn’t try to talk her out of it and for that, Niev was grateful. It killed her that she couldn’t tell Ann yet.
Blake and Kareem returned just as Niev and Ann were getting dinner started. She felt Blake’s presence come closer, and even though she wasn’t ready to share any of her thoughts or fears with him, she was glad to have him back.
‘Just a few more minutes.’
‘Good. We got hungry and started dinner.’
‘We’ll help as soon as we’re back.’
To Ann, Niev said, “They’ll be back soon. I can feel Blake come closer and he just linked me saying they won’t be long anymore.”
“It’s so cool that you two can talk with each other when he’s a wolf.”
“It’s helpful.”
“So, you can’t feel each other when he’s far away?”
“That’s right. We haven’t really tested out our limits, but the further away he is the quieter the bond gets until it falls silent.”
“Oh that’s so fascinating!”
A little while later, Blake and Kareem stepped in. Blake walked toward her right away and wrapped her into his thick arms.
“How are you feeling? Did Natalie come and check on you?”
“She did and she said as long as I’m feeling good about myself, I can be just as active as before.”
“Good.”
“Beta Fallon asked us if we would like to go on another hike tomorrow. He said this one was less steep, and the weather would be good.”
“If you feel up to it, I’m happy to go.”
“I do and I’m sure if I don’t, you’ll be more than willing to help me.”
“Always.”
After dinner, Blake and Kareem cleaned the kitchen and Niev retreated to take a bath. Ann had suggested she take one to relax and fill her energy for the day ahead. Niev closed her eyes and relaxed, trying to think of anything but the upcoming months.
She rubbed her stomach and drifted off into a daydream of holding the girls. She was excited to see them. What color were their eyes? Would they look exactly alike? Without modern prenatal care, she didn’t even know if they were identical or not.
With a quiet knock, the door opened. Looking up, she saw Blake step in. He came closer and kneeled on the floor next to her.
“I know you aren’t ready to talk, but I feel your uneasiness.” He gently ran his fingers through her hair. “Just know that whenever you are ready, I’m here.”
Taking a deep breath, she nodded and moved to stand up. He helped her out of the tub and wrapped her in a fluffy towel.
