With him...?
Yes
Fine but only because I want to see you.
See you later!
“Niev? Is that you?”
Niev looked up from her phone to see Lesley River coming toward her. He was wearing a flannel shirt, blue jeans and boots. His deep green eyes shimmered in the sun and his lips turned up in a crooked smirk.
“Hi Lesley.”
Niev couldn’t help but blush at the sight of her old flame and the guy who’d brought out her rebellious side. Blake was quite curious and pushed down his wolf’s overbearing jealousy as Lesley stepped closer.
“It’s been a long time since you showed your face here.” To her surprise, he stretched out a hand to Blake and Niev let go of his arm so he could shake it. “I’m Lesley.”
“Blake, nice to meet you.”
Lesley’s eyes fell on Blake’s other hand and his wedding band. “Ah, what a lucky man you are. I was never able to hold her down,” he joked. “Now what brought you two here? Please don’t say you’re moving back. That would be such a step back after you fled this dreadful place.”
Niev couldn’t help but grin. He’d always hated Brighthill but loved his father’s farm far too much to leave.
“No, I came to talk to Mom and Dad but that went awful.”
“What a shame. I would’ve thought they would want to meet their grandchild.”
“That obvious, huh?” Niev giggled.
Lesley gave a one-shouldered shrug. “Just a little. Come on, let’s get that basket filled. We had a great harvest, you know?”
Blake’s wolf calmed slightly as he saw Lesley’s intentions were more on the business side than wanting his old love interest back.
“So, you own a farm?” Blake asked.
“Not yet, still waiting on the old man to die.” Lesley had always been quite blunt about his views. “And you? What kind of man was able to tame our little wild child?”
“My family owns a lumber business.”
“Is it far from here? I’m looking for someone to help me convert an old barn to a home.”
“I believe Hunter’s Creek is a little too far away.”
“Isn’t that past Clemont?”
“A little north of it.”
“What a shame.” Lesley reached for Blake’s basket and started to fill it with fresh produce. “Nothing really has changed here, but I’m sure you already guessed as much.”
“And who did you decide to marry?” Niev teased.
“Ah, yeah that seems to be the hot topic around here these days and the reason why I don’t own my own farm yet. Father won’t give me anything until I tie the knot.”
“You’re too picky.”
“I mean…” Lesley’s eyes mischievously shot to Blake. “You set a pretty high standard.”
“And you are as cheeky as always.”
