“But your brother is different?”

“Kent is a fucking useless whore.” Her eyes darkened, her chest filling with a growl she didn’t even seem to notice. “Walks around like he’s the biggest baddest wolf but can’t do shit.”

He pushed his hands over her hips and under her shirt in an attempt to calm her. As soon as his fingertips touched her skin, the growl weakened.

“He does nothing for the pack but fucks everything he can like he’s in a brothel,” she started ranting. “If he would at least take his heritage seriously and try to take over some of father’s duties… But no. He just walks around letting his cock do his thinking for him.”

“Should you be telling me these things?” he chuckled, amused.

“My feelings about him are no secret. Others think the same but I’m the only one bold enough to say it out loud. I’m pretty sure other packs see it the same. He acts like this everywhere he goes.”

“We’ve heard rumours.”

“See? If even your pack knows about it, everyone else has known for years already.”

Playfully he crooked his eyebrow. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“You know what I mean.”

He did. While other packs liked to build and grow partnerships, the Blood Wolves stayed to themselves. When the peace agreement had been signed and the land split up into territories they’d been given less than others, such as the Shadow Wolves. There were many stories and rumours about why this had happened, but nothing ever confirmed. The Blood Wolves believed it was because the other packs wanted to keep them small, fearing what would happen if the pack grew in size. Of course there were lands unowned by wolves but if a pack wanted to expand their territory, they needed the approval of the other alphas.

She sighed. “Let’s not talk politics anymore.”

“Good, I had other plans anyway.”

As one hand slid up the knots on her spine, the other held tightly onto her waist. He shifted his weight and turned, pinning her down beneath him. She didn’t fight him, which he loved and even made his wolf hum in the back of his mind. He pressed his lips to hers, gently at first but then her fingers ran over his neck and her nails scraped over his scalp. He could feel her frustration when she couldn’t grip on to his short hair. He deepened the kiss, his tongue licking over the seam of her mouth. That light hint of peach was like a drug–and he was addicted.

There was a tug at his mind, and a growl rumbled from deep in his chest. He already had so little time. He didn’t want it to be interrupted by Gabriel pulling him away from her.

“What is it?” she asked, trying to catch her breath.

“Politics.”

“Okay.”

She didn’t seem to like it either, but she didn’t fight him when he pulled farther away. Every cell in his body fought him as he sat up. He gently kissed her forehead and climbed out of bed.

“I won’t be long.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

“I’ll try to make it short.”

She grinned up at him. “Better.”

He didn’t get very far–Gabriel was leaning against the wall in front of his door. Ryker walked back to the kitchen, not wanting Kendra to overhear their conversation.

“What are you doing?” Gabriel questioned.

“What does it look like? Walking to the kitchen so I can grab a few snacks.”

“You shouldn’t be with her.”

“Weird. I didn’t hear Alpha Vallerian say I couldn’t.”

“Don’t be stupid. You know exactly why he’s allowing it.”

To make Ryker’s punishment more severe. He stopped at the pantry and grabbed a few more crisp packets.
