Page 56 of Claiming Her Alpha
She sighed and rolled her shoulders, tears filling her eyes. It hurt, not only talking about the pain but desperately wishing she could open up to someone about it. Unable to deny what he’d seen and felt, she tried to be as vague as she could. “She’s lonely–we are lonely. I keep seeing everyone with their mates, having children, being in love and I guess I just keep asking myself…” She trailed off as her voice began to crack.
Unexpectedly, Avery pulled her into a tight hug. “I’m sorry.”
She tried to laugh it off. “I’m just being impatient and jealous, that’s all.”
“She has chosen a path for you that seems to be very long and tests your patience. But just like you’ve gotten your wolf far along the path, she will provide you your soul and us with an alpha.”
“And what if not? I’m luna now, even with me being somewhat alpha I still have to provide the pack with an heir. What if I can’t…”
“You will find him.” Avery’s voice was full of certainty.
“What if I can’t and my pack is without an heir, after I stole them an alpha in the first place.”
“It was your birthright.”
“Now it seems like I’m doing what she would want, but I fear that one day I– or the pack–will regret this because of it.”
“Every alpha has those fears. It’s natural because you want your pack to thrive even after you’re gone. You’re not alone in your fear. Believe in the path that was chosen for you and you will see it will all come together.”
She had to remind herself of everything she’d prepared in order to get Ryker back. Her plan was slowly unfolding, the envelopes still hiding in Benjamin’s cabin waiting for her call.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I didn’t mean to overstep, but it worried me.”
“I didn’t mean to worry anyone.”
He loosened his grip. “We all have our walls up for a reason. I just wanted you to know that I’m here to talk if you need.”
“Thank you.”
“I didn’t mean to snoop, it just stuck out to me.”
“Avery, I’m not upset with you. I’m more upset with myself for losing my shit.”
He gently laughed. “Oh please, better now than in front of everyone in a little bit. I’m sure you’ve been asked this a lot but are you ready?”
“I am–excited, even.”
“Good.”
He gave her a few moments before they slowly began to head back.
“Can I also ask you something personal?”
“Of course,” he agreed.
“You and Kent. Well, do you feel like I…” She didn’t even know what she wanted to ask.
“I never looked forward to being his beta. I would’ve done so because it’s my duty towards my pack though we were never really close.”
“Do you feel the same about me?”
“No, I feel in good hands with you. I feel like we can work well together and though we might not always agree, I think we can work it out.”
“I feel bad because I never truly sat down with you. You were just so open from the start that it never occurred to me that we might have to sit down and talk openly about our feelings.”
“Do you feel as if I’ll be a good beta to you?”
