“I have a feeling we’re forgetting something.”

“What do you mean?”

Isaiah shrugged, returning his gaze to where their mate’s wolf splashed around in the water. “I’m not sure, but this is too easy.”

“Can’t you stop being pessimistic for five seconds and enjoy this?”

“But this feels like the calm before a storm.”

“Why don’t we just take it as it comes?”

Isaiah didn’t answer, his mind spinning as it tried to make sense of the whole situation.

Vel didn’t return to them, not even when she shifted back in the shallow water. She sat down with her back to them, the water covering her up to her shoulders. Knees to her chest, she looked over the sparkling lake. After a while, Asher saw her shiver. He undressed himself—down to his underwear—and walked over to her. The water was cool, much cooler than he would have preferred. They usually waited to swim until much later in the summer.

Sitting behind her he wrapped his arms and legs around her and laid a gentle kiss on her neck. Only then did he realise she was crying. He wrapped his arms even tighter around her, surprised when she didn’t fight him.

‘Shit—her parents’ funeral,’ Isaiah realised.

Asher thought back—their funeral had been in the summer months, though the exact date escaped him.

Vel’s father had made the arrangements as soon as he discovered his mate had passed in her sleep. Only days later, he met the same fate. Their father had made the decision as alpha to burn both bodies on the same day so they could return to Isis together. Velora had watched their bodies burn, kneeling in the dirt before them long after the skies opened and doused the flames. Theodore had been the one to drag her home and command she change into something dry.

That night, the twins overheard an argument between their parents: their father was concerned the pack would think ill of him should he kick Vel to the curb.

‘We’re assholes.’

‘We are.’

“Want to talk about it?”

She shook her head, so he held her even tighter and spoiled her with kisses over every inch of bare skin he could reach.

Far too soon, she pulled away and stood up, her ass now right before his face. The urge to lean in and brush his lips over it was so strong he found himself shifting to do so—but she was much faster. She dove headfirst into the water and when she came back up to catch her breath, she’d shifted again.

He felt like shit as he returned to Isaiah. She was their mate and yet, it felt as if they couldn’t help themselves but fail her over and over again. He knew that Isaiah felt the same, blaming himself for not figuring it out sooner.

Asher dried himself off with a towel and changed into a pair of dry underwear. They watched Vel’s wolf dive through the frigid lake, her tail wagging like that of a puppy. Her wolf was her comfort and she wasn’t the only one to seek comfort in her wolf when dealing with overwhelming emotions.

Fur dripping, she came back to them an hour later. Part of him expected her to shake herself out and shower them with cold water, but she only shifted with no teasing whatsoever.

Looking anywhere but at her naked body, Isaiah handed her a towel. Asher tried to do the same, not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable. He cracked open a water bottle for her while she wrapped herself in the towel and found a spot between the two of them. Her eyes were still red and dulled with sadness.

Asher moved to sit behind her, grabbing her hair tie from the pile of clothes next to her. He attempted to brush the wet, golden strands out with his fingers before he divided them and began to braid. He’d never been good at braiding, but he did it to comfort her. She clearly didn’t want to talk, so there wasn’t much else either of them could do.

“Can we go back?” she asked after filling her stomach.

“Of course,” Isaiah agreed. “Would you like to hike or run?”

“Hike.”

Vel dressed as the twins packed up their belongings. The hike back was quiet, emotionally heavy. Halfway through the journey, she reached back and threaded her fingers through Asher’s. She said nothing about it, staying deep in her thoughts as she walked next to him.

Isaiah seemed visibly happy, his eyes beaming as he looked at his brother. This was one of those small things they’d anticipated and had longed for and now that it was there, Isaiah didn’t have any room for jealousy. They were both elated that she was opening up and seeking them out for comfort.

When they got closer to the village, she slowed down and took a deep breath.

With her grip tight on Asher’s hand, she turned to Isaiah and stretched up to plant a kiss on his cheek. He instantly turned a deep red and his eyes widened as Vel turned to Asher and did the same.
