“Not very. She is still very cautious about celebrating it. Her sister had a few miscarriages, so we’re being careful.”
“Understandable, especially with all the current stress.”
“I’m a little more positive. So, I might get into trouble once she knows I told you.”
“Your secret’s safe with me.”
“Thank you, Luna.”
Isaiah’s mind pushed against hers and she opened to see that the rogues had reached him as well. Axel had begun to fight as well, so she updated the pack. She hated everything about the situation. Not being able to fight was worse than being injured in battle.
The team that Axel fended off was led by the double agent. He switched sides once the Crystal Warriors charged. A few followed and surrendered while the others tried everything to accomplish their mission.
Isaiah and Asher weren’t part of the lucky ones. Their teams fought with everything they had. Though she tried not to linger too much, phantom pain made her body ache. She wasn’t the only one experiencing them, little sobs and cries filling the air as they returned to Luka’s home.
Warriors knew how to close their minds off to their mates as part of their training, but some of the men that were fighting had only gotten a crash course. It was natural for them to always be connected, and they now had trouble severing that bond.
“Remind me to make sure that everyone is taught to separate from their mates in future,” she said, trying not to listen to another heartfelt cry.
“Yes, Luna.”
Lennard, their spotter just outside the village, linked with her. ‘We have company approaching from the south. I can only see three.’
‘How did they pass the border undetected?
‘I can’t sense them—I only know because I have eyes on them.’
Velora wasn’t sure how that was even possible—but she was damn sure going to find out. ‘Let them pass.’ To the others she said, ‘Company approaching from the south. Let me handle this until I call for you.’
Velora stayed rooted in her spot, already having a plan in mind. She would let them approach, lulling them into a false sense of security. Most importantly, she didn’t inform the twins.
After a while a naked man guarded by two wolves stepped out of the woods. He grinned mischievously as he looked around. “Fuck that worked like a charm.”
The two wolves let their tails twitch playfully.
With the gun in hand and a finger on the trigger Velora stepped into their view. “If I were you, I’d go right back to where you came from,” she called to them.
“Oh, who do we have here?” the naked man teased, his grin not faltering. “If it’s not that little luna. I can’t believe they left the village unprotected.”
“So you think.”
The man snorted in a laugh, nearly choking on the air he was breathing as his eyes dropped to her weapon. “Put that gun down before you hurt yourself.”
Velora raised her arm and aimed at the man. “If you want to live, you’ll leave right now.”
“Oh, sweet child, I will rip you apart before you could even pull the trigger.”
The crack echoed around them before he finished his sentence. The first silver bullet sliced through the air, landing perfectly between the left wolf’s eyes. The creature couldn’t even howl out in pain before his body sank to the floor, blood pooling beneath his head.
“Try again,” she taunted, walking towards the two that she’d spared.
“Fuck you bitch,” the man snarled as the second wolf pounced.
Velora shot again, landing two more bullets in each of the wolf’s legs—right where human knees would be. She pulled at Luka’s mind and the warrior closest to her, wanting them to step to her side.
Luka and Kenneth stepped out of hiding as the injured wolf tried to find his footing again and the naked man shifted. ‘Keep him alive.’
While they turned their full attention to the shifting man, she took down the second wolf.
