“Oh, I’m pretty sure Rayan has been a pain in the ass for weeks,” she laughed.

Axel parked next to the large garage where a small crowd had already gathered. Curtis and Mia were the first to throw their arms around her before her feet even hit the ground.

“You came!”

“Dad said you would, but Mia didn’t want to believe it until she saw it with her own eyes,” Curtis explained. He’d outgrown her over the winter. He was tall and sleek, his hair a mess and his warm eyes smiling down on her.

“You’re so tall!”

“Give her some space to breathe,” Heath scolded them, making them both take a step back.

Though Heath smiled, he seemed tired—and sad. Unable to look at him any longer, she quickly pushed Axel towards him. “Axel, meet Alpha Heath and his two kids, Curtis and Mia. This is Axel, our first warrior.”

Heath stretched his hand out and took Axel’s in his. “It’s nice to meet you. This is Beta Wayne, his mate Evelyne Rose and their daughter Rayline.”

Axel greeted each of them with a handshake before turning to Marvin and Rayan. “And you are Marvin, the first warrior and Rayan, her former partner in crime.”

Rayan seemed surprised at first, but then his eyes split into a proud grin “That’s me.”

“I’m sure you two had a long journey, so how about we show you your guest house and let you rest before dinner?” Heath suggested.

“I can do that,” Curtis offered.

Heath nodded. “We had dinner planned at my house around six.”

“Please tell me someone else is helping you cook.” The words were out of Velora’s mouth before she could stop herself.

“Curtis will do most of it but Evelyne had mercy on us and offered to help. I’m only allowed to set the table.”

Curtis babbled the entire way to the guest quarters, updating her on everything she’d missed. He still didn’t feel his wolf, which frustrated him but he tried to be patient like his father had taught him.

“He misses you, you know?”

“Curtis, please. You’re going to make me cry.”

“I’m sorry. It’s just…” He stopped in his tracks, and it felt odd to have to crane her neck to see him. “We all miss you, but he has become quieter.”

“My cue to go. That house over there?” Axel asked but was already moving in the right direction.

Velora took Curtis’s hand in hers and gently ran her fingers over his knuckles. “I miss him too, but I was never his luna and we both know that.”

“I know. I just worry about him and now that you’re gone, I have no one to talk to about it.”

“You can call me, you know?”

“I think he’s just waiting for me to be old enough. He misses Mom a lot and people usually don’t stay alive long after they lost their mates and if they do, they’re miserable the entire time.”

“Curtis…”

“Look, I’m not a child anymore. Mia doesn’t see it, but I do. Everyone sees it and they’re all just waiting for me to be old enough to take over. I just wish I had someone to talk to because it scares the shit out of me.” Velora looked shocked—she’d never heard him swear. “Don’t tell him that I used that kind of language.”

“It stays our secret, and my offer always stands. You can call me anytime.”

He then pulled her into another hug and squeezed her tightly. “I love you.”

“Oh, I love you too.”

Curtis spun on his heel and left, but not before she noticed the tears in his eyes.
