“Clearly not.” Rayan forced a laugh.
Alpha Heath leaned in and wrapped his arms round her. “Let’s get you out of the water.”
“Shame, I wasn’t even able to take a swim yet.”
“I think she’s a little high from the rush.” Rayan tried to laugh the situation off, but he was too tense.
She was laid on the soft moss just as Alex—the pack’s doctor—shifted and placed his bag next to her. He quickly assessed her, bandaging the worst of her injuries.
“You lost a lot of blood. The more the adrenaline fades, the more pain you’ll feel so I’m going to start an IV and give you something to make you comfortable. It should put you right to sleep.”
She nodded, but fear replaced the adrenaline making her heart race. “I wanna wake up again.”
“I’ll make sure of it.”
The needle pricked the back of her hand, a sharp burn stinging the area before heat spread through her arm, warming her entire body.
“It’s just the medication, it stings a little but soon you’ll be dreaming.”
The world around her spun, everything blurring into strange colours. Then everything went black.
Alpha Heath’s stern voice was the first thing she heard when reality started to come back to her. “Bury them. I don’t want them to be burned.”
“Will she be alright?” That voice belonged to Beta Wayne.
“Alex said she’ll be fine.”
“Where is Rayan? I didn’t think he’d leave her side.”
“He mentioned something about her favourite blanket and a sweater.”
“I’ll see to the rogues.”
“I’ll join you when Rayan returns.” He sighed, a deep breath slowly escaping him. “We could have lost her.”
“She’s far too tough to let that happen.”
“She did good.”
“She did.”
Soft footsteps sounded, then a door shut quietly, and the room was plunged into silence. Though she tried to return to the dreamless sleep she’d been having, the pain wouldn’t let her. Her ribs ached and her outer thigh burned.
A soft hand caressed her cheek. “Velora?”
She tried to move but her neck felt stiff.
“Are you in pain?”
She peeled her eyes open, meeting Alpha Heath’s worried ones staring down at her.
“I can call for Alex so he can give you something for the pain. You don’t need to torture yourself.”
She was able to nod this time, the stiffness leaving her body.
He cupped her face with one hand while his other combed through her hair. “He’s on his way. Rayan will be back soon too.”
“Okay.” Her throat felt like sandpaper.
