“What was yours?” she asked.

“Luna Laureen wanted to go to Sumster for their summer festival. She was pregnant and Alpha Heath was very concerned about her.”

“So, you were her guard?”

“Yes, but with him constantly around I was more of Curtis’s personal guard.”

“I’m sure he loved that.”

“Oh, he was all over it.”

As they ate, Rayan told her all about his official assignments. That seemed to distract her nerves enough for them to make their way to the grave.

At the gate, Leroy stayed in his human form, while Velora and Rayan positioned their wolves to either side of it. Their dark SUV arrived on time not a minute later than they’d said. Leroy greeted them, asked about weapons, and informed them to follow the road before opening the gate.

Velora couldn’t see much between the tinted windows and the sun’s glare, but as they drove by she inhaled their scent. Her head spun from how familiar it still was. She seemed to know their scent as well as she knew herself.

While Rayan stayed behind, she sped ahead and ran down the road before them, their scent no longer bothering her. She’d run this road countless times, but this time it felt much longer. All she wanted was to leave their presence and for them to be back on their way.

She led them to the garage where she and Rayan sat down and waited for them to park. Their scent washed over her once more. Her wolf hummed in the back of her mind.

Velora’s heart stopped.

Mate.

It couldn’t be. She’d been eighteen when she’d left the territory—she would’ve known if she had a mate there. While her wolf jumped around in the back of her mind, eager to see which one of them was hers, her human became angry.

It was Asher who stepped out of the driver’s seat. She knew that because he looked as arrogant as ever while Isaiah was the one to hold back. Too afraid for them to lock eyes with her, she looked away. As long as the bond hadn’t been officially established, she could still escape it.

As Asher stretched, she saw something silver catch the light out of the corner of her eye. He was wearing a dagger he hadn’t declared at the gate. As Heath and Wayne greeted them she couldn’t help but take a step closer. Only part of it was because of the dagger—the other was her wolf eager to get close to her mate.

A growl rumbled her chest, though so quietly a human wouldn’t have noticed—but they did. Heath shot her a warning glance as she stepped behind the twins and nudged at Asher’s waist. Her tail twitched as she tried to keep it from wagging.

‘Step back,’ Heath growled, disappointment and shame flooding her.

‘Weapon.’

Though he was raging on the inside from her behaviour, he kept a calm façade. “My young wolf believes you are carrying a weapon.”

Asher reached for the dagger and showed it to Heath. “I only remembered wearing it after driving through the gates. I didn’t bring it to use as a weapon—it was my father’s.”

Even in such close proximity, she couldn’t distinguish which one she was bound to.

“My brother didn’t mean anyone harm,” Isaiah quickly added—and his voice was the sweetest thing she’d ever heard. He’d always had a deep, melodic voice but this time it was different than all those years ago.

Shit… shit… shit…

They were both her mates.

“I truly didn’t. I apologise.”

“I must do the same for my warrior’s behaviour.”

“He seems young,” Isaiah chuckled. “We all had to start somewhere at some point.”

Heath led the twins into the village and to their housing with Wayne and Marvin by his side. Velora was left dumbfounded as she watched them walk away. Her wolf pounded at the back of her mind.

‘What was that?’ Rayan scolded her.
