“Probably both, but he was talking to me as my alpha. Soon you’ll have to do it too.”

“He does it to me too. I have to call him Alpha then and not Dad.” He leaned against her and added, “I like you two together. He’s been happier with you here.”

“And if you don’t stop, you’ll make me cry,” she chuckled, his words deeply touching her.

“Dad says sometimes the truth hurts,” he laughed. “Will you stay for dinner?”

“Not tonight.”

Though sad, he nodded and stood up. “I’ll make sure he doesn’t burn the house down.”

She watched him disappear inside before walking off, but she didn’t go to her cabin. She had no idea where she was walking to, but she was far too upset to be around anyone. She undressed and shifted in the shadows of the trees and ran to her favourite spot to watch the sunset.

With the darkness finally consuming her, she felt Heath hesitantly push against her mind. He was asking her without words to come to him; not as alpha—as her boyfriend.

She sighed and contemplated for a while before running back to the village. As usual, she walked into his home without knocking and found him in his office.

When his eyes met hers, they turned worried and somewhat apologetic. “Have you eaten?”

She shook her head and leaned against the doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest.

“We still have some leftovers. Curtis did most of the cooking, so it’s edible.”

She shook her head again.

He sighed, standing and rounding the desk to stand in front of her. “Mistakes happen. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

“But it wasn’t a mistake.”

He cupped her cheeks in his strong hands and brushed his thumbs over her cheeks. “Yes they had a dagger but—”

“They always get away with shit,” she interrupted. “Leroy asked them about weapons. A dagger is clearly a weapon. No matter what those assholes say, they knew what they were doing. Asher always likes to test limits and he always gets away with it.”

Her words sank in and Heath stiffened. “What…”

Velora tried to wrench herself out of his grip. “I would do it again.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Why should I?”

“Because I wouldn’t have let you be part of this if I had known.”

She twisted away from him, but he held onto her wrist to keep her from leaving.

“Velora, don’t storm off.”

“So you can lecture me some more?”

“I promise I won’t lecture you, but you’re hurt. And you don’t need to hurt alone anymore.”

She finally looked at him, tears filling her eyes and spilling down her cheeks. “I hate them.”

He softened his grip and led her to the couch where he pulled her into his lap. Velora straddled his thighs and laid her head on his shoulder, falling limp in his embrace.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, stroking her spine in an attempt to soothe her.

Needing his touch, she pushed her hands under his shirt. “Take my mind off them,” she pleaded, pressing a kiss to his neck.
