Marcus tilted his head while Varos’s brow creased.

“I know what we’re doing tonight. When I looked up the address it showed the events for the evening.”

Varos relaxed, and a smile graced his mouth. “And you still came. That means we made a good choice.”

“Ask her again after we leave,” Marcus laughed.

She’d had no reason to expect a negative reaction, but she’d tensed anyway. Old habits die hard.

They led her inside, bracketing her on either side. She was upset with herself for spoiling the surprise. Varos presented their tickets while her eyes were drawn to the candle-lined path. Nothing but their flickering light illuminated the inside of the large building, guiding them to where the planes were displayed.

Each man took an arm, leading her towards the hanger. Candles lit their way, their dim light dancing across the walls. The atmosphere was highly romantic, the sun setting beyond the large picture windows only adding to the ambiance. Older aeroplanes decorated the space, and in the middle a small stage had been erected, holding a piano and violin. She was no expert, but she was sure that it was no ordinary violin. It almost resembled a small electric guitar.

“We were only able to get seats in the back,” Varos whispered as he leaned closer. “It seems that this one is very popular.”

“You’ve never been here before?”

He shook his head and Marcus indicated their seats. She took the one in the middle, admiring the rustic, intimate environment.

They waited quietly for the concert to begin, but the silence was far from awkward. She folded her hands in her lap, watching as the musicians took to the stage. She’d expected someone to introduce them or welcome the guests, but the pianist sat, fingers dancing over the keys and filling the hangar with a sweet melody.

She let the music consume her, letting it guide her far away from her everyday thoughts. The violinist began, weaving with the sound of the piano and time was no longer important. Only the transition from one song to the other seemed to break the trance she found herself falling into.

Song after song filled her mind. It was something she’d never experienced before. Music had always touched her, but she’d never felt anything like this. When the last notes fluted away, the applause from the audience almost felt aggressive to her ears. Of course she joined, but overwhelmed with emotion, she didn’t quite feel herself.

Varos leaned in to whisper in her ear, lips so close they practically brushed her skin. “We can wait until everyone has left.”

She couldn’t quite find her voice, so she simply nodded in response. Some people hung around to admire the planes while others left immediately.

“That was really nice,” she whispered, throat tight with emotion.

“I thought so too,” Marcus agreed then with a cheeky grin, he leaned closer. “Maybe you could mention that to Lysander. After all, he thought we would bore you to death.”

“Far from it.”

“We are glad you enjoyed this as much as we did,” Varos said, standing and offering her his hand.

“I didn’t think I’d get so emotional,” she admitted, letting the men lead her back down the path of candles.

Marcus once again offered her his arm. “That’s precisely why I enjoy live music.”

“It was really beautiful.”

Varos moved his hand to her lower back. “Would you like me to call a cab?”

“I’ll just do it with the app.”

“I think that means she doesn’t want you to pay for it,” Marcus chuckled.

“I wouldn’t mind, but we won’t force you.”

Unsure of what to say, she pulled out her phone and hired her ride home. “I really enjoyed this,” she repeated.

Marcus pressed a kiss to her shoulder again, eyes blazing as he straightened. “We did too.”

Her Uber arrived just as they led her out the door. They followed her to the car, where Varos took her hand in his again and softly brushed his lips across her knuckles. He helped her into the car, and Marcus closed the door. “Good night, Avalon,” they said in unison.
