“What if someone takes your phone? Corners you against a wall? What are you going to do then?”

“Scream.”

“They’ll just knock you out.”

She snorts. “No one’s going to hit me.”

“Don’t bet on it. Until we figure out who is sending those letters, you aren’t going anywhere on your own. End of story.”

“Who do you think you are? Our parents just got married, and you’re not actually my brother.”

“Thank fuck for that.”

His words hit her like a slap, a flash of hurt shining in her eyes like a beacon. He didn’t mean it the way she’s taking it, but I’m going to let them figure that out on their own. For now, I’ll try to playpeacemaker.

“Harper, we’ll figure out a path forward soon, but for now it would make all three of us and your parents feel better if you’d let us accompany you around. We’ll stay back and be discreet if you want.”

“The fuck I will.”

I shoot Declan a glare that he gives right back to me.

“I’m fine with you or Cy,” she says to me. “Just not him.” Her eyes burn with anger as she looks at Declan.

“Okay, we’ll make it work.”

Her phone rings, and she smiles when she sees who it is. “Banks is calling. Can you give me some privacy?”

I swear I catch a low growl from the back of Declan’s throat, but he turns on his heel and stalks across the hall to his room. I’m tempted to follow him, but the door slams behind him, and I hear the lock flip. It’s fine, I need a shower anyway.

HARPER

It’s been a long week of having at least one of the guys tailing me everywhere. I’m looking forward to taking a long bath, putting on my comfiest pajamas, and lying in bed all night. Maybe I’ll even get really wild and eat takeout in bed while I have a face mask on.

Cy joins me on the sidewalk outside the building. “You look happy.”

“Just planning my night.”

“Oh good, Declan told you then?”

“Told me what?” I slant my eyes inhis direction.

“There’s a party at the Cypress ruins. We’re going.”

“Cool.” Even better that I’ll have the house to myself. “I’m sure it’ll be fun.”

“We didn’t think you’d agree so easily.”

“You’re big boys, I don’t get a say in what you do. Besides, I’m excited for some alone time to get ready for Banks tomorrow.”

He stops and gently wraps his hand around my forearm. “No, I don’t think you understand. You’re coming with us.”

“What?” I pull my hand from his grip and step back. “I don’t like parties.” I don’t even know how to act at a party.

“Well, the three of us have to go which means you do too.”
