“What’s happening is that you’re playing a stupid game with my family and the business.”

“Why are we back to that now?” I ask. My heart thuds against my chest and feels like it’s about to explode. “What we experienced together was real. And it seems like we just fucking erased all of it.”

She scoffs again. “We?”

“Yes. We. Or maybe just me,” I say, my voice thick with emotion. “Because I’ve been running like hell to satisfy your family’s requirements, and it seems pretty fucking underappreciated.”

She blows out a breath. “For all I know, this weekend was just a stunt.”

None of this is making sense. “Oh my god. This conversation is so confusing. Are you even listening to yourself? Our time together was a stunt, now?”

“I have no idea, Jonathan, but this is obviously a sham, and you should have thought a little more clearly before you did this.”

Cold blood drains from my face. “Did what?”

She sighs. “Our lawyers will be in touch.”

A click sounds before the raw silence comes.

What the hell just happened?

Gripping the phone in my hand, I stare as the display lights up several times. A long line of messages come in, one after the other, along with half a dozen missed calls. Sweat prods at my forehead. I blow out a series of breaths to gain control.

Ava

Jonathan, we need to talk.

Ethan

What the hell? This is bullshit. Call me.

Simon

I’m not sure this is the right course of action.

More messages appear on the screen while I have the phone in my hand, all too vague to make any sense of it.

As I type out a quick response to Simon, my assistant, my heart goes into sudden palpitations. I stand up and breathe before punching out a response.

Me

??

He responds immediately.

Simon

Turn on the news.

I pick up the remote control and switch to the local news channel just in time to see an older female reporter facing the camera and standing outside Lane headquarters. The top of the screen says, “Breaking News,” and the bottom says, “Lane Entertainment sues Wolfe Media for $90 million.”

My brain races as adrenaline shoots through my veins.

Oh my god. My chest breaks out into a sweat. What the hell is this?

“In a shocking turn of events, Jonathan Lane, CEO of Lane Holdings, has joined forces with his family to sue their rival, Wolfe Media,” the journalist reports. “It remains unclear whether the two Las Vegas billionaire families will continue to work together amidst the turmoil.”

A lawsuit? I never agreed to any of this. Who filed this?
