“I found out a few days before I came to you. You aren’t a monster, Jax. You are so far from it. I got to know you, and then, I fell for you. And the thought of you pushing me away after falling for you was—is—unbearable, but I can’t hide this from you.” His hands left my hips and came to rest on my stomach.

There was a tiny flutter when the baby kicked, and I cried. They knew daddy was here. “Why are you cryin’? I’m not pushin’ you away. I can’t lose you either.” His confession made the tears come quicker.

“Can you feel that?” I moved his hand right where the baby was kicking, and he stilled.

“Is that…”

“I know it’s a lot, Jax. I know you weren’t ready for a relationship or to settle down, so I understand if—" Jaxon closed the space between us, pressing his lips to mine.

“I thought I wasn’t ready, Logan, but I was ready for you the moment you came into my life. So, you better not be comin’ up with some shared custody plan. I want all of it with you. I just wish it had happened differently.”

“Different how?”

“I wish I could have helped you with that checklist. But don’t worry. Now that I know about it, you can be damn sure I’ll do my best to check everythin’ off that list, sweetheart.” My heart skipped a beat because no one had ever understood my obsessive need to check off lists.

“Are you saying what I think you are?”

“If you’re askin’ if I love you, then the answer is yes. I was going to tell you after a round of some mindblowin’ sex, but since you’re lyin’ beneath me, carryin’ my child, it seems like a fittin’ time, don’t you think?”

“I think I’ve been in love with you since that night.” I brushed my nose along his, our lips so close, I could taste his warm breath.

“I think you deserve some lovin’, sweetheart. I’ve shown you once before, but I think you need to be reminded of how a cowboy takes care of their woman.” If I hadn’t been lying down already, I’d have fallen to my feet.

“You’re not mad?” I whispered, threading my fingers through his hair once again.

“Not even a little. You’ve given me everythin’ I didn’t know I needed in just one night. I couldn’t be happier, Logan.”

CHAPTER16

Jaxon

I was goingto be a father.

Logan’s warm, soft, even breaths brushed against my chest as she slept soundly. Her hair tickled my jaw, but I couldn’t find it in me to move it away.

The rising sun streaked through the curtain, bursts of light filtering into the room, making her skin glow. I didn’t want this moment to end.

With one hand behind my head and the other resting comfortably on her perfect ass cheek, I had never been more content, even with our baby between us.

How I hadn’t noticed the small bump or her aversion to alcohol and coffee was beyond me. I wanted to be mad. And if it had been anyone else, I would have left, spewing rage, but it was Logan.

The woman with electric green eyes that set my soul on fire and a smile that made my knees weak. There was something special about Logan. The moment she walked into that bar, everything changed. The second our eyes clashed, the minute I found out she could talk about beer, and the first time I heard her moan my name.

I didn’t believe in soulmates until I saw Archer and Kenna find each other after years apart. As kids, we joked that she was his soulmate. That was where the nickname turtledove came from, but then, he left for college, and she disappeared a few years after and never came back—not until her Momma passed away.

Watching them rekindle their flame taught me that soulmates were real. I had to believe that Logan was mine.

We just understood each other in a way that words couldn’t express.

She was carrying my baby, a life that we created with one reckless night. Glancing down at her peaceful face, freckles scattered across her cheekbones, long black lashes fanning her face, I knew could never be angry, and I couldn’t leave her.

“Are you having second thoughts?” Her voice was huskier than normal in the morning. She didn’t open her eyes, but her hand that was resting on my bare chest traced across my skin.

I cleared my throat before speaking. “About you and the baby?”

“Yea, about that.” She was nervous. I saw her reaching for the chain around her neck, the one she never took off.

“I’ll be honest with you—I didn’t plan any of it. I wanted my career to be stable before ever lookin’ for you.”
