I smiled. “Yeah, you can, but I still wanted to give you a heads up.”

“Thanks, Grey,” she said softly. Then, “I’m sorry your family is so messed up.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Ramsey will be here shortly to take me to the ball,” she said. “Should I still go?”

“You’ll be surrounded by other daemons and gods,” I told her. “Erini would have to be truly crazy to go after you there.”

“What about my daughters? Would she come after them?”

Would she? I didn’t think so, but then… shehadjust threatened my shelters as a way to get to me. “She’s not usually that indirect in her thinking, but it’s possible. If they stay together, with Kerberos to guard them, they should be safe. If you want, I can skip the party and keep an eye on them.”

“You’d do that? For me?” she asked.

“Any day.”

“You’re amazing, thank you, Grey. I love you.”

“Love you,” I breathed.

We hung up, and I hurried out of Elysium and across town.

ANAIS

After Ramsey arrived,I’d explained about Grey’s sister, and he’d immediately made a few calls.

Even with Grey at the apartment, Ramsey was concerned for my daughters — bless him — and wanted a bit more support. So, he’d called in a favor with his cousin, Anubis.

When Anubis arrived, he had the strangest beast with him. It had the head of a crocodile, with the mane and front end of a lion, then the back end of a hippo. Its name was Ammit, and it was certainly intimidating to look at.

“Should I ask?” I whispered to Ramsey.

He chuckled. “Ammit eats the hearts of evil-doers, but she’s actually really cuddly if you get to know her.”

Well, as guard animals went, that sounded like exactly what I’d want.

“Works for me,” I said with a shrug.

Between Kerberos and Ammit, with Grey’s void, Eva’s war, and Caia’s healing… I figured my daughters would be okay if Grey’s sister decided to visit.

Ramsey and I delayed leaving until Grey arrived. The tall daemon rushed in, looking a bit disheveled, and he gave me a quick kiss and told me not to worry. With him guarding my kids, I didn’t.

“Stay close to her, tonight, just in case,” Grey said to Ramsey.

Ramsey grunted with a smirk. “Of course.”

Then, Ramsey and I went down to Grey’s Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine, but the car didn’t move once we were inside.

I looked questioningly at Ramsey.

“I asked the chauffeur for a little time before we left,” he said, voice husky. “We ate up some of that waiting for Grey, but there should still be time for a littlefun. Something to take your mind off… everything.”

“Oh?” I asked, suddenly interested, tingling heat filtering through my body despite the revealing — and chilly — dress. “And… how exactly do you plan to distract me?” I asked, although I had a pretty good guess.

“I want to make sure Horus, and every other daemon and god, knows you’re taken once we arrive,” Ramsey said, slipping off the seat beside me to kneel on the floor in front of me.

“You going to chain us together?” I teased, waggling my eyebrows at him.
