My body arches against him as I come. I tremble in his arms as he holds me until he finds his own release. I can feel all of it inside me.

He groans once more, kissing my neck, before he rolls off me.

We lie there, staring up at the ceiling.

“How was it?” I ask.

“I should be asking you that.” He glances over at me. “It was your first time.”

“It was amazing.” And therein lies the problem. If Nico were horrible, all of this would be so much easier. How can I kill this man beside me?

“Good.” He pauses. “But, Aurora, this doesn’t change things.”

I frown. “What do you mean?”

“I could have gotten you hurt. I can’t let myself … feel for you.”

“But we just had sex.”

“I know. And fuck, I’m honored I was your first. But you’re making me care deeply. What if you get hurt again?”

I place my hand over his heart. “Then make sure I don’t get hurt again. But don’t pull away, please.”

He sighs deeply, his eyes softening. “Come here.” He pulls me into his arms. “If I could guarantee you’d be safe here forever, I would make that happen.”

“I would, too,” I whisper.

“I’m not worried about myself. I can handle a lot.”

But can you handle the wife you care for betraying you?

“Just don’t push me away, Nico.”

He tightens his arms around me in response.

Chapter

Eleven

AURORA

“This was painted by the renowned painter Picasso. We will start the bidding at one hundred thousand dollars.”

People begin raising their paddles to bid. Soon, the Picasso painting goes for over five hundred thousand dollars.

Nico and I sit at the auction, with him bidding on things we don’t really need. Even though I come from money, I’ve never been to an auction before. That was more my father’s thing.

The memory of my father hits me in the gut. His body has been found. The police know something is wrong. They’re looking at Nico and me, and if we’re not careful, we could get hurt.

After I gave Nico my virginity, it brought us even closer. Nico constantly touches me now. Little touches on my back when he opens the door. His fingers graze mine when we pass each other in the hallway. It’s exactly what Beatrice wanted—Nico cares forme even more. I don’t have to ask him to know that. I can see it in his expression and by his behavior.

He didn’t pull away, and I’m grateful. I don’t want to be alone any longer.

I’m just not sure how I can kill him now or even if I want to. Nico is becoming more my husband with every passing day. I know Beatrice is getting antsy for results. If I’m not careful, she just might try to kill Nico herself.

I squeeze his hand. “I’m going to get a drink.” He gives me a small smile and a little kiss before letting me stand. It’s the small, simple things like him kissing me that make this so much tougher.

I head up to the bar near the back of the auction room and order a water. I’m so parched. It must be my nerves. Everywhere I go, I feel like someone is watching me. If I don’t find a way to kill Nico soon, I just might die from paranoia.
