“Yeah, a fifth of tequila,” I toss back at her as she shakes her head and laughs at herself.

“What did I even say to you?” She asks.

“Something about being of legal age finally and if I knew how to use my equipment yet,” I laugh, recalling how uncomfortable I got while listening to her breathless voice in my ear. She was wasted, but it didn’t stop my dick from getting hard in my jeans. Seems some things never change because even when she came on to me drunk months ago, my body still yearned to have her. The woman has been enticing me for years.

“Dear Lord. I’m sorry, Coop. But for what it’s worth, seems me hitting on you while drunk was bound to happen.” I glance over at her and she’s giving me a soft smile—the kind that has more warmth to it than sexual innuendo.

“Yeah, everything happens for a reason, doesn’t it?” I question, not really looking for an answer from her as I flick on my blinker and make the left-hand turn on the road leading up to Hyatt Lake.

Once we reach the entrance to the resort, Clara and I hop down from my truck where I’ve parked in front of the main office. Even though my parents own the cabin, the resort will rent it out throughout the year, so we have to check in still like guests.

“Hi, welcome to Hyatt Lake,” the hostess greets us, flashing me a wide smile as her blue eyes trail down my body and then back up to my face. She’s checking me out and I’m not sure how I feel about this with Clara beside me. “Do you have a reservation?” she asks while flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder.

“Uh, yes. Under Cooper Walsh,” I answer, handing her my license and credit card. Her eyes flick over to Clara and then back to me.

“Yes, I have you here in the system. Would you like two key cards, one for you and one for your friend?” She shoots Clara a glare with her passive-aggressive words, and I can feel the anger radiating off of my woman when I look to my left.

“Actually, this is my girlfriend,” I say before Clara’s claws come out—but I’m not going to lie and say that sensing her jealousy isn’t a huge turn on and a glimpse of hope that Clara feels as strongly about me and I do for her.

“Yes, and we’ll be together the entire weekend, so there’s no need for two keys. But if you have one of those do-not-disturbs signs, we’lldefinitelyneed one of those, won’t we, hun?” Clara’s voice is two octaves above normal, but her words are dripping with venom and she directs them straight at the hostess behind the counter. Then she leans into me, wraps her arm around my waist, and rests her head on my chest, grinning from ear to ear and batting her eyelashes while looking up at me dreamily.

Fuck yeah! She’s claiming me and I feel like I just won five rounds with Muhammed Ali.

“Sure thing,” the blonde bobs her head and then clicks away on the computer, avoiding Clara’s eyes again, her shoulders curling in on themselves. She hands me the key and then a map of the resort, but I’ve been here so many times as a kid, I know exactly where I’m going.

“Thank you,” I nod my head at her before claiming Clara’s hand in my own and turning back to exit the lobby and hop in my truck to drive to our cabin. There are twenty cabins here, all situated along a semi-circular driveway. Our cabin happens to be tucked deeper into the trees, providing the most privacy.

“What a bitch,” Clara finally says as I stroll through the drive, slowly making our way to cabin nineteen.

“You seemed to put her in her place really quick,” I say with pride as I pull into the parking spot in front of our place for the weekend.

“Damn right. Who does she thinks she is? Hitting on you while I was standing right there?” Clara is seething and I can’t help the smile that stretches across my face with this development. “What are you smiling for?” She turns to me and shifts her anger in my direction now.

I reach for her and pull her face to mine, kissing her deep and long until I get that moan hidden in her throat, knowing she’s lost in the feel of our tongues stroking each other. When we part, I bop the tip of her nose and then quietly say, “You’re so sexy when you’re jealous,” before opening the door and hopping down out of the truck before she can argue with me any further.

I grab our bags from the bed of the truck and roll them to the front door just as the porch light flicks on. The sun has officially set, which is exactly when I wanted to be up here. The green roof and mahogany wooden beams that make up the structure glisten in the last bit of sunlight in the sky, and the front porch offers a beautiful view from the top of the peak we’re on.

I swipe the key through the magnetic lock and hold the door open for Clara so she can enter before me. Clara’s head turns around as she takes in the cabin, observing her surroundings just as I’ve seen her do before in my condo. To the left of the door is the kitchen with dark-stained cabinets and black appliances. Beyond that is a small dining room table in an evergreen painted room just big enough to seat four people. I ate many meals at that table. In front of us is a small hallway leading to the two bedrooms, and to the right is the quaint living room where a new black leather sofa sits facing a newer flat screen TV. The walls are covered in dark and glossy oak boards, and a few of the same paintings hang on the walls from my childhood, pictures of the forest surrounding the resort and aerial shots of the property.

“The place looks exactly the same as I remember it,” I say once the door closes behind me and Clara turns to face me.

“This place is so nice. Did you guys come up here a lot?”

I reach out my hand for Clara, waiting for her to come to me so I can encase her in my arms. “We always came up a few weekends each summer and winter. We spent Christmas here a few times too. The resort has been here for years, but when they remodeled the cabins, they put some of them up for sale to ensure money coming in year-round, so my parents snatched one up. They still come up sometimes, but it’s been years since I’ve been here.”

“I love it. Thank you for bringing me here.” She rises on her toes and plants another passionate kiss on my lips. If she keeps this up, we will never leave the cabin. And although that sounds like the perfect weekend, the whole point of coming up here was so we could go out in public and be a couple together without fear of being seen. I need her to trust me and let me show her how great our life could be outside of our secret closet.

“I definitely want to continue this later,” I murmur against her lips as she reaches down to rub my dick through my shorts. “But I want to feed you first. Come on,” I pull her hand behind me and put her back in the truck, driving across the little town to a steak restaurant that has been here since I was a kid. I made reservations last week as soon as I secured the date for the cabin and Clara agreed to come with me.

I have some wooing to do, and this is the first step—a meal out in public with Clara. I just hope she stays on her best behavior.

Chapter 21

Clara

I won’t lie and say that the thought of going out in public to eat a meal with Cooper isn’t the most exciting thing to happen to me in months. I mean, obviously being with him has been life-changing—but the fact that I actually get to experience a real date with him is making my heart hammer in my chest and a flurry of excitement burst through my veins.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” I say as I bounce in my seat and Cooper pulls into the parking lot of the steakhouse known as The Rusty Bull.
