“Feck the people, we need to find Wiggles.” Tyson spat a fireball into the ground. A bit of webbing caught fire and doubled in size. Rehan stomped it out before we trapped ourselves in an inferno.
“Jay said, ‘Find a mage,’” Rehan repeated. “The spider isn’t one, but it sounds like it’s caught two people who know more than we do.”
Rehan tried to pull out his ponytail, which resulted in him almost braining himself on his claws. I wanted to laugh, cry, and rage all at the same time.
Lux squeezed my arm as if he felt my conflict. “Jay’s strong. Too strong. There’s nothing we can do to help her now. We have to help ourselves.”
“By befriending a spider?” Rehan asked skeptically.
Lux winked. “Sometimes, you need to hold your cards close to your chest and play a different hand.”
Rehan let out a long breath. “It’s either going toward the known.” He gestured to the same tunnel the spider scuttled through. “Or wandering the unknown, knowing what could sneak up on our backs.”
“I fecking hate the second option,” Tyson scrubbed his spiky hair. “Let’s go rescue the people or feed them to the spider, whatever we need to get to Wiggles.”
Lux nodded and turned, taking the lead. I looked up at the space Jay should have fallen through a final time before stumbling after the others.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
JAIYANA
Itossed a chunk of concrete into the opposite wall and listened to it clunk. The abandoned tunnel I’d dropped into was pitch dark and dry for humid England. I’d not moved far from the manhole we’d jumped down, just around a corner, so if the police came down, they wouldn’t see me right away. I wasn’t sure if staying put was my best option or not, but just in case the guys found a way back out right away, I wanted to be close.
Because you want them to find you.
Despite all your bravado, despite everything you think you know. You want to spend the rest of eternity in a dragon sandwich.
I closed my eyes and let their promise that I wasn’t alone anymore sink into my bones.
You’re not alone, Jay. Maybe physically, but don’t be dramatic.
Unsupportive ass.
If I needed more proof that nothing I’d done with my dragons had unlocked even a piece of my magic, this was it. The barrier between London and Under London rejected me. Tomake things worse, my dragons were now in a different world. I opened my palm and called on Tyson’s fire but got nothing.
See, I’m not being dramatic. I don’t even have their magic.
My inner voice sighed.
I pressed my fingers into the corners of my eyes.
What do we know?
Fuck all.
Jay, don’t do that. We always know something.
We’re not magical right now?
True.
Under London’s barrier is keeping my dragon’s elemental powers away from me.
True.
Great sex is not unlocking my curse.
Probably true.
