CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE

ADRIAN

“So, Mom says you have a boyfriend,”Amelia says, her voice booming over the speakers in my car as I drive home.

I laugh. “I suppose so. What else did she say?”

“Not much. She overheard your convo with Dad. Said she had no clue about any of it. Dad never let on about anything.”

“Yeah, but it’s not like I could even open up to her. Dad wasn’t the only one who made little homophobic jokes.”

“Some people will always be homophobic assholes, but sometimes people can change and grow. Especially when it comes to their kid.”

“Are you saying Mom is capable of growth and change?”

“She didn’t say anything too crazy. She asked if I knew. She said she, quote, doesn’t know what it means, end quote.” Amelia laughs. “I don’t even know what she means.”

“Well, I guess we’ll see how things develop, but it’ll be hard to forgive Dad for everything. Plus, Mom was also on board with this forced wedding.”

“Well, she said Dad told her you and Charlotte had been secretly hooking up anyway. So, she presumed there were some sort of feelings there already.”

I scoff, shaking my head. “So Dad just lied to everyone.”

“Basically. Mom seemed a little pissed about it.”

“Regardless, I’m not taking any steps. So if they want to make a change or show some effort, then it’s on them to reach out.”

“Yeah. I understand. But when do I meet the boyfriend,” she says in a sing-song voice.

“Let’s give it a minute,” I say with a laugh. “We still have some stuff to talk about.”

“Fine. It’s almost August now, so I’ll give you until November. I’ll have time off around then for Thanksgiving, and I expect to be invited over.”

“Okay.” I chuckle. “Thanks for feeding me the gossip. Let me know if they have anything else to say about me.”

“Will do.”

“Love you.”

“Love you more.”

Once she’s off the line, I bring up Matías’s name and presscall. It rings a couple times before he answers.

“Hello?”

“Hi,” I say, a stupid smile on my face. “I’m on my way home.”

“Oh, that’s good.” I can hear the joy in his voice. “What time?”

I glance at the GPS. “Maybe around four-thirty.”

“Okay, well, I have an idea if you’re up for it.”

“I’m up for anything.”

“You come home, eat, shower, change, and do whatever you need to do to prepare yourself for a night with me.”

My smile is wide when I reply. “Okay. And then I go to your house?”
