I do what Lucas wants and sit down at the table, positioning myself so I can feast my eyes on him while he prepares my breakfast.
The first time I laid eyes on him, I noticed how gorgeous he is. Since then we’ve been through a lot together, and I’ve come to care for him. Now, gorgeous isn’t a strong enough word to describe the way he looks to me, and it probably has something to do with the way his personality enhances his appearance.
I let my eyes soak in the details of him from his dark-brown hair, cut to brush his shoulders, to his large feet. Perhaps there really is a correlation between the size of a man’s feet and the size of his dick. Then again Lucas is big all over.
Heat rushes through my veins again, and instead of food, I want to rip his clothes off and get started on round two right here and now.
Lucas suddenly turns his head and grins at me over his shoulder, like he can somehow sense what I’m thinking. “Are you ogling me?” He wiggles his eyebrows and gives me a mock disapproving look.
Nodding, I burst out laughing.
He looks exceedingly pleased before turning back to the onion he’s slicing.
As I sit there, studying his well-proportioned, muscular back, I start pondering what he said earlier. What did he mean by attraction being a weakness?
For me not being able to connect with a man for the last four years has left me feeling weak and inadequate. Less of a person in a way.
Is it different for Lucas? And if it is, is that because he’s an elemental, or is it a personal preference?
My thoughts spin around the differences between us until a plate appears before me on the table.
The omelet is huge and is accompanied by two pieces of buttered toast and a glass of orange juice. There is no way I’m going to be able to eat it all, so I cut the omelet in two and put one half to the side for later.
“Are you all right?”
I lift my gaze to see concern on Lucas’s face as he studies me, and I realize my expression might reflect the tightness in my chest. My thoughts have left me weary of the attraction between us, and where it might leave me when it’s all over.
I quickly push the thoughts away and paste a smile on my face. “I’m fine. This looks and smells delicious. Thank you.”
I immediately dig in to the food, using it as an excuse to focus on something other than Lucas until I can get control over my emotions. I don’t know why the fact that we might not have a future together suddenly bothers me. We just met and don’t even know each other yet.
When I’m done, I put down my knife and fork and let out a content sigh. “Thank you, Lucas. That was fantastic. How come you know how to cook when you don’t eat?”
He chuckles. “Most people I know eat, and food is a great way to connect with people, even if I can’t eat it myself.”
Chapter 28
Lucas
The tightness around her mouth has softened, but I can’t help wondering what she was thinking about earlier.
“Can I ask you a personal question?” Her head is tilted a little to the side as she looks into my eyes.
I think I do a good job of hiding my apprehension when I smile and nod. “Of course, anything.”
“How old are you?”
I conceal my sigh of relief as a chuckle. That’s an easy one. “Twelve hundred and thirty-five years old.”
Her mouth drops open in shock, and she blinks at me for a few seconds before she closes her mouth with a clack. “That’s…a long time ago. How did you come to be an elemental? Were you born one, or…” She frowns. “Were you born at all?”
I grin. “I was born, but as soon as my energy signature manifested itself, which happened at around six months of age, I was picked up by my team leader to be raised and trained by him and the other elementals to become an enforcer.”
Her frown deepens. “Your parents just gave you away?”
I shrug. “I don’t think they were given much choice. If I had stayed, I would have been a danger to them and their other children, and the compensation they received was substantial.”
