She smiles up at me. “Okay. It’s not like I can deny I’m hungry with my stomach betraying me like that.”
Laughing, I brush my lips over her forehead. Then, I bend and scoop her up into my arms. The urge to carry her is strong, and now I know why. It should probably scare me, but it feels so right. I can’t help the pride I feel that I’ve found my mate, and she’s the most magnificent creature in the world.
“Are you going to carry me all the way to the kitchen? I’m able to walk, you know.” There’s barely concealed laughter in her voice.
I walk out of the office and head toward the kitchen. “I know, but I happen to like carrying you. Do you want me to put you down?”
“Is that a threat?”
I look down into her face to see her grinning back at me. “Do I look like a vet to you?”
“Well, you could be a vet. They do insemination, don’t they?” Her eyes sparkle with amusement, but it’s her words that cause my cock to stand to attention. I do my best to ignore it.
“So, now you’re comparing yourself to an animal? I resent that.” I wink at her.
She gasps and swats me lightly on my chest, pretending to be deeply offended. But she fails miserably when she bursts out laughing a second later.
After a few minutes, we reach the kitchen, and I reluctantly put her down. I lean down and give her a quick kiss on her lips before I stride over to the fridge. “What would you like?”
Chapter 32
Erica
I walk up next to Lucas and survey the contents of the fridge. “This time I will fix it myself. It’s your turn to go sit at the table and look pretty.”
He chuckles and gives one of my ass cheeks a good squeeze before he goes to sit down.
I throw him a smile over my shoulder before I grab a few things from the fridge. The piece of omelet I put in the fridge for later is gone. Most likely one of the security guys pounced on it.
But that’s okay. I’d like something different for lunch anyway. So, I make myself a ham and cheese sandwich and a cup of tea.
But as I go to sit down across the table from Lucas, I stumble and stub my toe on the chair leg, and both my sandwich and my cup of tea go flying.
I can only watch in horror as the cup of tea hits Lucas in the middle of his chest just as he, in a blur of motion, catches my sandwich midair. The scalding hot liquid soaks into his T-shirt, and the pain in my toe is immediately forgotten.
I round the table and grab his arm. “Quick, a cold shower will help.”
He just looks at me and smiles like nothing is amiss. Then he suddenly frowns, scoops me up, and puts me in a chair.
“Lucas! What are you doing? You need to cool down the burn.” I try to get up, but he squats down in front of me and puts an arm across my lap to prevent me from rising.
“My element is fire. I don’t burn. How’s your foot?” He grabs my ankle, pulls off my shoe and sock, and studies my foot.
Completely stunned, I stare at him for several seconds before I regain the ability to speak. “You don’t burn? What do you mean?”
He lifts his gaze to mine. “Heat and fire don’t hurt me like it does humans and most supernaturals. I can walk into a furnace and the only thing I’ll feel is energized. My chest is fine, Erica, a little wet but fine. Your foot?” He raises an eyebrow at me.
Laughter bursts from my lips. “That’s amazing. I mean you told me you can draw energy from fire, but I didn’t really understand what that meant. You can walk into a blazing fire. That’s just… Wow.”
Lucas shakes his head and grins. “I take it your foot is okay.” He puts my sock and shoe back on before lowering my foot to the floor. “I’ll make you a fresh cup of tea.”
Sitting there motionless, I stare after him as he goes to turn on the electric kettle. I suddenly feel a little overwhelmed by everything that’s happened in the last few days.
Lucas is by far the most amazing man I’ve ever met, and he’s acting like he enjoys my company. But what does a man like him want with someone like me when he could have any woman he wants, including supernatural women who must have a lot more to offer than I do.
And that’s not even taking into account the fact that I’ll grow old while he’ll stay the same forever. I’ll soon get wrinkles and gray hair and start to sag in all the wrong places while he’ll stay young and gorgeous with hard muscles and plenty of energy.
“You should eat your sandwich. Your tea is steeping.”
