“Not at all. He didn’t seem concerned that I was dying. Or seemed to be dying.”
Lifting his hand to cup my face, he stares into my eyes. “You weren’t dying. You’re immortal now. Your body was just reacting to someone else trying to force a bond on you.”
“Well, it certainly wanted nothing to do with Gerard’s blood. I threw up until my stomach was completely empty. At least that’s what it felt like.” A wry smile twists my lips.
Lucas nods slowly. “I think your brother and his family will be perfectly safe now. It was you the asshole was after. They were only a means to an end.”
“Do you have a phone so I can call him?”
Lucas pulls his cell phone out of his jeans pocket and hands it to me. He’s still bare-chested after giving me his T-shirt earlier.
I punch in David’s number and wait.
“David Heart.”
“It’s Erica.”
“Where are you? Are you okay?” David’s voice is a bit high pitched, but thankfully he sounds okay.
“Yes, Lucas and some of his friends rescued me. The vampire who took me is dead. I killed him. You’re all safe. Are Mina and the kids okay?”
I hear him breath out a deep sigh. “Thank God. Yes, they’re fine. Are you sure you’re all right?”
“Yes, perfectly. I promise. Lucas is taking good care of me. I’ll bring him around to visit sometime soon so you can get to know him.”
There’s a pause before my brother speaks. “Fine. I look forward to it.”
I laugh. “Don’t sound so enthusiastic about it. I think you two actually have more in common than you might think. For one, you’re both overprotective of me.”
“Just make sure to tell him that if he ever hurts you in any way, I’ll kill him.” David sounds exactly like the overprotective big brother he is.
I chuckle. “I’ll make sure to do that. Bye, David. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye, Sis.”
After ending the call, I hand the phone back to Lucas. “Did you hear?”
He grins and pulls my head back down to rest against his chest. “Yes. Your brother cares about you. I respect that. It’ll be nice to meet him as his brother-in-law instead of his prisoner.”
Chapter 49
Lucas
We arrive at Trevor’s with half an hour to spare before dawn, and I carry Erica from the car to my room. She tried to object, but my need to have her close is so strong I couldn’t force myself to put her down if I tried.
Lyn already has a room in the house, and Markus will find somewhere to sleep, unless he chooses to stay with Lyn. Who knows what’s going on there?
After entering my room, I continue straight through to the bathroom. I set Erica down on her feet and pull the T-shirt over her head before cupping her chin and staring into her beautiful eyes. “Brush your teeth, my sweet mate. I want to kiss you.”
She grins, and I turn her toward the washbasin. Then, I reach into the shower and turn on the water.
While she rummages through the drawers to find a new toothbrush, I use the opportunity to pull down the zipper of her dress.
After putting toothpaste on the toothbrush, she turns back to me with a grin.
I tug at the dress until it falls to the floor in a heap, leaving her naked before me save for her bra and panties.
“How am I going to concentrate on cleaning my teeth with you undressing me?” She tries to look annoyed but fails miserably when the corners of her lips lift with amusement.
