I shake my head to try to regain normal brain function. Narrowing my eyes, I prepare to rip him another one for implying that I launched myself at him in order to change his mind.
Before I can, though, he bends down and picks up something from the floor. When he straightens, I see that it’s a phone. “Maybe Aidan’s friend can pull some info from this to help us find Olivia.”
Ronan’s gaze lifts to mine, and all my anger falls away. He’s my best bet at finding my best friend. The fact that he’s a pigheaded ass—and a gorgeous pigheaded ass at that—doesn’t change the fact that I need him.
At least until he can tell me where she is. I can pace myself and be compliant until I get that information, and then I’ll leave and go after her myself.
I paste what I hope is a warm smile on my face. “That would be great. Anything you can do to help me find Olivia is much appreciated.”
His brows furrow as he studies my face, like he doesn’t trust my suddenly sweet disposition. As well he shouldn’t. But I have to be convincing if this is going to work. “Thank you for everything you’ve done so far. And I’m sorry I stormed in here. I was just so anxious to find her.”
Nodding slowly, he lets out a sigh. “I know. But it could have cost you your life. You do realize that, don’t you? I don’t want to watch you die, even if it’s a result of your own reckless behavior.”
Fuck. Now he’s being sweet. That will make it harder to defy him. Why couldn’t he have just continued with his arrogant attitude?
“Are you two coming?” Lucas’s voice sounds from the doorway. “As expected there was no one hiding in the attic, butwe have a vampire to move without raising suspicions. Do you want to bring the car around or should I?”
“I’ll do it.” Ronan doesn’t wait for me as he storms out of the room, but then there’s no one here left for him to protect me from.
Chapter 8
Ronan
I race down the stairs and out the door, heading toward the car.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.Payton’s sweet taste still coats my tongue, and the incessant need to bury my cock inside her soft body pulses through my body, preventing my erection from softening.
I can’t believe she threw herself into my arms like that. It took me completely by surprise. And the way my desire rose like a tidal wave inside me, I couldn’t stop myself from responding.
But I should have. Nothing good can come from fucking her. Except, of course, for the obvious—the pleasure when I shoot my cum into her welcoming body.
The thought is enough to pump more blood to my rock-hard shaft. Which is exactly what I don’t need right now.
Fuck.I yank open the car door and slide into the driver’s seat. But instead of immediately starting the car, I fist my hands in my hair and stare out of the windshield.
I can’t remember the last time I was this hard for a woman. Patricia was beautiful and soft, and I enjoyed our time together, but the passion between us wasn’t like an out-of-control firestorm. Not like I just experienced with Payton. And that was without taking our clothes off, or even doing much other than kissing.
I take a deep breath and let it out slowly before pushing the button to start the vehicle. We have to bring the vampire with us so we can question him before we kill him. He might havevaluable information about Olivia and the master, and I’m going to squeeze that information from him any way I can.
After parking directly outside the house, I get out and open the back. I hope they’ve found a rug or something to wrap that light-sensitive son of a bitch in. But no matter how they’ve covered him, it’s going to look like we’re moving a dead body. Which is so close to the truth it might have been funny if I didn’t know he was trying to capture Payton in that alley.
As I turn to head toward the house, Payton walks out the door. She’s followed by Lucas, who’s indeed carrying a rolled-up rug over his shoulder, and Erica, who closes the door behind them.
Payton walks directly to the passenger-side door and gets in without any fuss or visible agitation. She looks calm and collected like what we’re doing is nothing out of the ordinary.
Perhaps Lucas has instructed her how to act, but even if he did, she’s doing an excellent job of pretending everything is fine.
Lucas puts the rug with the vampire in the back of the vehicle before crawling in after it. Erica slides into the back seat.
After closing the back door, I get into the car and start the engine. I make sure to drive at a normal speed down the road. There’s not a lot of people out in the street, and I don’t know if anyone has paid attention to what we’ve been up to. But at least my speed isn’t going to be the thing to make them notice us.
“That was some show you put on in there? I didn’t know you could do that.” Lucas’s voice sounds from the back.
I know exactly what he’s talking about. “Neither did I. It’s new, I think.” But it’s strange that it’s taken this long to manifest. As far as I know, none of the other elementals have had new aspects of their powers appear after the first century of their lives.
“That’s interesting. I wonder…”
When he doesn’t continue, I frown. I wonder why as well, but I’ll leave it until later to ponder that question.
