After closing the door behind them, Sam went over and sank down on the couch. Technically, what had just happened was against the rules of fraternization. An omega from the enlisted ranks shouldn’t be spending his heat with a commissioned officer. But she wasn’t going to report them. It was her team and she’d run it the way she chose. If the brass found out and had a problem with it, she’d take the hit.

Chapter 33

Hazard couldn’t believe that Ice had come for him. The captain had turned him down and he’d accepted that. But his heat-laced mind had called for him anyway. And now, he was in a truck with Ice driving down a gravel paved road with heavy woods on either side. Every so often, he spied a cabin through the trees.

“Where are we?” he asked.

“This is a privately owned camp ground. There’s a main lodge and they have cabins that they rent out. I have one. I was going to stay here while you were in heat.”

“Oh.”

They drove a little longer before they took one of the side lanes and went deep into the trees. Ice pulled up in front of a cabin and parked. It was neat but rustic. There was a grassy clearing in front and a small attached porch.

Ice opened his door and got out. Hazard went to do the same, but Ice pointed a finger at him.

“Stay.”

The command was unexpected. Nevertheless, Hazard obeyed and stayed put. Ice came around to his side and opened the door for him. He grabbed Hazard’s bag, then scooped him up in his arms. Surprised at the move, Hazard threw his arms around the captain’s neck to hold on. Ice kicked the Jeep door closed before carrying him up to the cabin.

“I can walk,” Hazard protested.

A low, short rumble of a growl made it clear what Ice thought of that idea.

Pleased and unable to hide it, Hazard pressed his face against Ice’s chest and let himself be carried.

Ice went up three steps to the front porch. He had to jostle Hazard around a bit to get the door unlocked and open while holding him. Once they were inside, Ice carried him over to the couch where he finally set him down.

Hazard looked around. They were in a medium sized main room that consisted of living area and kitchen. All of the walls were constructed from treated wood. There was a red brick fireplace on the wall between the two spaces. The living room had the couch where he sat, a coffee table, and a braided rug on the floor. The kitchen had small, white appliances, a table and four chairs. Off to the side of the living room was an open doorway. Through it Hazard could see a bed, nightstand, and the corner of a dresser.

“This is cozy,” he said.

“I come up here sometimes to relax and for my ruts. Spend most of my leaves here too.”

“Thank you for bringing me here. We don’t have to have sex if you don’t want to. Just being near you should calm me enough to get through this heat.” He extended the offer as a way to let Ice know that he wasn’t obligated to sleep with him just because he’d lost control and howled for him.

Ice leaned down until they were face to face. He put his hands on the couch cushions on either side of Hazard’s shoulders, caging him in. Breathless at the alpha’s closeness, Hazard stared into the dark eyes watching him intently.

“You think I brought you all the way up here to sit five feet away from you while you go through your heat?”

Hazard swallowed. “You didn’t?”

“No. I said I’d take care of you. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

He put a finger beneath Hazard’s chin and tipped his face up for a kiss. Something settled in him when their lips met, as if the kiss sealed a promise that Ice had made. But something else roared to life. The wave that he’d been holding at bay during the drive up wasn’t going to be ignored for much longer.

Ice pulled back.

“Let me put your food away in the kitchen,” he said as he brushed a thumb over Hazard’s lower lip.

Hazard didn’t want to let Ice go. Biting back a protesting whine, he turned, watching over the back of the couch as Ice took his bag into the kitchen and pulled out all the snacks he’d brought. He quickly stored them in the fridge or the narrow pantry then returned just as fast to Hazard’s side.

Hazard moved to get to his feet but before he managed to do so Ice picked him up again. This time Ice held him so that they were face to face. Hazard wrapped his arms around Ice’s neck and his legs around his waist. Ice’s hands moved down to hold him by the ass. It felt good being held like this, Ice’s strength holding him up with ease.

“I’ve got you,” he said as he carried him to the bedroom.

Hazard nodded. He took advantage of his position to tuck his face into the curve of Ice’s neck and breathe in his scent during the short walk from living room to bedroom. That woodsy cedar was a perfect complement to their current rustic environment.

“Do you need to make yourself a nest?” Ice asked.
