“Hate them. What about you?”

“I’m not a fan of chick flicks, either.”

Jackson snorted.

Rachelle smiled. “What kind of movies do you like?”

“Action adventure, romance thread optional. Do you have siblings?”

“One of each, both older. You?”

“Two younger sisters who were the bane of my existence growing up. They still stick their noses into my business at every opportunity.”

“Nieces or nephews?”

“Both. You?”

“Same. Is it safe to look, Jackson?”

“Not yet. Two more minutes.”

A moment later, soft material settled against her back.

“Thanks, Jackson,” Cal murmured.

“Yep. Did you sleep at all overnight, Rachelle?”

“No time. After the hotel and hospital were attacked, Amy and I were on the run. Once we hid in the warehouse office, I encouraged Amy to rest while I kept watch.”

Cal tightened his grip. “Protecting your friend again.”

“She didn’t volunteer to take a watch shift?” Jackson asked.

“Amy was exhausted.”

“So were you.” A pause, then the medic said, “You’re all set, Cal. I’ll give you a mild pain reliever when the lidocaine wears off.”

“Thanks for the patch job.”

“You say that now. Wait until you receive my bill. Rachelle, do you have injuries?”

“My left arm hurts.”

The medic checked her arm. “Looks like thorns or brambles tore your sleeve and cut you. The cuts aren’t bad, but I need to treat them to prevent infection.”

Once he finished, Jackson gathered his medical detritus. “If you develop a fever, I need to know about it. How long ago did you drank water?”

She frowned, thinking back through the nerve-wracking hours. “I don’t know.”

Jackson walked up the aisle and returned a moment later with bottles of water for her and Cal. “Drink this, then take a nap. We have food on board if you’re hungry.”

Rachelle’s stomach lurched at the thought of eating. Maybe later.

The medic looked at Cal. “I’ll check on you in an hour.” He checked the other Fortress operatives for injuries.

Cal tapped her bottle of water. “Better drink part of that. Jackson won’t be happy if he comes back to find the bottle unopened.”

She wrinkled her nose. “I’m not sure I can keep the water down.”
