Soon, Wolf Pack’s leader walked in, his expression grim. Cal went on alert as did the other operatives in the room.

“We have a problem.”

CHAPTER SEVEN

Cal stiffened. He didn’t like the sound of that. “What kind of problem?”

“The Dark Net is buzzing about a target slipping through the net in Mexico.”

Rafe scowled. “Nothing more specific?”

“There’s a contract on the target.”

“How much?” Jon asked.

“Two million dollars.”

“We still need more than that to go on.” Brody Weaver folded his arms. “While two mil isn’t chump change, I can think of half a dozen potential targets off hand aside from Amy Morales and her family who are as valuable to the right person in Mexico at the moment. We have to know if Amy’s the target because we can’t be constantly on the move with Eric’s injuries. I doubt Amy and Eric are willing to separate.”

“Maddox is preparing two safe houses while Zane is scrounging for more intel.”

“Texas will provide security for Eric and Amy?”

“That’s the plan. Phantom will be assigned to assist you.”

A slow nod. “Understandable with an HVT and a critically-injured principal. When will Maddox give more details?”

“As soon as he has all the pieces in place.”

Max inclined his head toward Rachelle. “What about her?”

Cal’s eyes narrowed. He wouldn’t leave Rachelle while her safety was in question. If necessary, he’d request a leave of absence. Maddox wouldn’t be happy. Tough. Rachelle was his priority. “She stays with me. End of discussion.”

Eyebrows rose at his declaration.

“Lucky for you, we’ve been assigned to Rachelle until we’re positive she’s not a target,” Eli said.

Rachelle frowned. “Why would terrorists be after me?”

“Protection is a precaution.”

“An unnecessary one,” she insisted.

“We’ll discuss that later.” Eli smiled. “You can hash that out with Maddox and your boss. Both of them believe you need a shadow.”

Rachelle rolled her eyes. “I’ll talk to Micah and persuade him to see reason.”

Good luck with that. The Fortress logistics coordinator had been in this business for a long time and had a nose for trouble. While Cal didn’t always agree with Micah’s assessments, in this case he did. Too many unanswered questions lingered about the terrorist attack and the frenzied search for the women.

“Orders?” Rafe asked.

“Wolf Pack has the watch. Texas will stand down for the next few hours.” When the other team dispersed to replenish their supplies and rest, Eli eyed the remaining operatives. “Jon, you and I will take the perimeter. Rafe, tap your FBI and CIA contacts. Find out what they’ve heard. Cal, you’re with Rachelle. Jackson will watch Eric and Amy.”

“How would the terrorists find us?” Rachelle turned to Cal. “They can’t know who rescued us from Mexico.”

“Enough money changes hands, and people will talk. We didn’t have time to avoid security cameras or interrupt the feed. Anyone who studies the images will know we’re well trained. Fortress has a reputation in Mexico, and the fact that you work for Fortress leads to the conclusion that we extracted you and Amy. If someone wants you and Amy bad enough, they’ll find you. Amy knows who you work for. What are the chances that she mentioned your employer to someone?”

“A hundred percent. But would that information lead them to the clinic and to Wolf Pack and Texas?”
