“Weren’t you Army Special Forces?” Barrel chest said to Fourth man.
“Yes, sir.”
“Check for weapons while the rest of us cover you.”
The man headed for Eli first. “How long have you worked with Fortress?”
“Since Maddox founded the company.”
“Like it?”
A slow smile from Eli. “We’re able to help people without fighting through red tape or waiting for warrants. Yeah, we like it.”
“Less red tape is better. What branch of the military were you in?”
“All of us are SEALs. You?”
“Force Recon.”
“What’s your name?”
“Chase McCord.”
“If you decide to go private, call Fortress and ask for Eli Wolfe. I’ll put in a good word for you with our boss.”
McCord stilled. “I heard you don’t apply for jobs with Maddox.”
“It’s true. He trashes applications by the hundreds every month. The only way to slide a foot in the door is if he asks you to come in for an interview. As soon as the cuffs come off, I’ll give you my card.”
“Hey.” Barrel chest scowled. “Stop recruiting my partner. I just got him trained.”
“Do the weapons check,” Cal said to McCord. “We need to get Rachelle out of here.”
By the time McCord finished searching the operatives, a pile of weapons sat in front of each member of Wolf Pack.
Holy cow. Rachelle didn’t realize they carried so many weapons on their persons.
“Check the chick, too,” Barrel chest ordered.
McCord glanced at Cal.
“That’s an order,” the grizzled cop snapped.
“Be careful,” Cal warned. “She has cracked ribs on the right side, a parting gift from thugs who tried to kill her two nights ago.”
“Yes, sir.”
Barrel chest frowned and motioned for McCord to do his job.
McCord assisted Rachelle to her feet. “I’m sorry, ma’am,” he murmured. “It’s policy.”
“I understand.”
“If your boyfriend thinks I’m hurting you, he’ll be on me in a flash and end up in jail. I’ll do my best not to hurt you.”
Even if he did, Rachelle refused to show it. The least she could do was keep Cal from being arrested. She stood still as the officer patted her down for weapons, then helped her sit again.
Barrel chest swaggered to the middle of the room, notebook and pen in hand. He pointed to Wolfe. “You first. What’s your beef with the vic?”
