A scowl. “You need a warrant to access the computer.”

A slow smile. “I have one. Do you want control of the crime scene on Montgomery land? It covers about three miles.”

Jordan was silent a moment, then shook his head. “Since, as you and the director say, our security is compromised, can your department handle the scene?”

“With help from the TBI, yes.”

“Call them. I’ll concentrate on Grisham.” He inclined his head toward one of his agents. “I would like Agent Garrison at the crime scene. He’ll keep me informed and lend a hand.”

“Of course. I’ll ask one of the men to drive him out there.” David left the room and returned a minute later with a ranch hand. “This is Rusty. He’ll take Garrison to the main site. Our coroner just arrived on the scene.”

Jordan rose and glanced at his second agent. “Mayfield, you’re with me. Montgomery, I’ll be in touch. I promise you, I’ll get the information we need.”

“Jordan.”

The agent paused at the threshold. “Yes?”

“Marty and Jerome killed Emma’s grandfather. One of the Hunt Club teams murdered former agent Rafe Torres’ girlfriend. Find out who killed Callie.”

Jordan’s face hardened. “Two more charges to add to the growing list. We’ll talk to him about those accusations as well.” He and his co-worker walked out.

David held up a hand to forestall any conversation until the front door closed behind the three federal agents and Rusty, then he turned toward Cal. “Tell Eli to bring his team here. My brothers brought in the part-timers to help with the scene and prisoner transport to the Sheriff’s office. We need to move fast.”

Emma frowned. “I thought you were going to work with local law enforcement and the FBI to capture these teams.”

He smiled.

Gigi groaned. “Don’t ask questions, Em. It’s obvious the Montgomerys and their friends have a secret plan.”

Oh, boy. She should have realized something was up when David ceded even a smidgen of control to Agent Jordan.

Emma wanted to help David and the others, but fatigue hit her with the force of a sledge hammer as her energy level hit rock bottom. Every muscle in her body hurt as well as her head. Nap first, then she could offer her assistance. “Is it safe to take a nap?”

David was on his feet a second later. “Absolutely.” He held out his hand. “I’ll walk you up to my room. No one will disturb you there.”

“Come on, G.” Owen tugged the B & B owner to her feet. “You’ve been through the wringer yourself.”

She cast him a suspicious glance. “Is this an excuse to get rid of me?”

He frowned. “I’m trying to take care of you,” he said as he led her upstairs.

“Is something going on between the two of them?” Emma murmured to David.

He chuckled. “Oh, yeah. Don’t say anything, though. They haven’t figured out what it is yet.”

She smiled. This would be fun to watch. She loved Owen and Gigi. Although she’d never thought of them as a couple, sparks flew between them when they were together.

David wrapped his arm around Emma’s shoulders as he walked upstairs with her. At the door to his bedroom, he gathered her in his arms. “Do you need anything?”

“I could use over-the-counter pain medicine,” she admitted.

He stiffened. “You said you weren’t hurt.”

“Muscle aches. I don’t think Marty and Jerome were gentle when they hauled us out of the cabin. I also got tossed around in the back of the van. Some of us aren’t used to three-mile runs in the woods in the middle of the night.”

“You’ll find an OTC in my nightstand.” He brushed his mouth over hers. “You were amazing tonight, Emma.”

“All I did was follow your instructions. You did the hard work.”
