“Then you’ll like your new safe house.”
A cabin sounded intriguing. She could think of far worse places to be in hiding. If the property was isolated enough, she might be able to go for walks.
Emma regretted not asking Mrs. G to buy knitting needles and yarn for her. Knitting kept her stress level down. If the safe house was located near a town with a knitting shop, perhaps she could purchase the supplies she needed.
David returned with a bag and picked up hers. “Let’s go.” He escorted Emma into the kitchen where Caleb handed her two cups.
“Tea for you and coffee for David.”
She kissed his cheek. “Thanks. I’ll take care of him,” she whispered.
Caleb’s lips curved.
“Where are Rafe and Cal?” David asked Eli.
Wolf Pack’s leader opened the back door and stepped outside. A moment later, he returned with the other two men.
David swore in Rafe and Cal as deputies. “I appreciate the help.”
“Glad to do it,” Rafe said. He glanced at Eli. “We’re ready to roll. The SUVs are parked near the deck stairs.”
Eli handed David and Emma a small device to slip into their ears. “This will allow you to communicate with my team as we travel.”
“Where are we going?”
“Archer.”
David smiled. “It’s at the edge of Morgan County. I know the police chief. She’s a good cop and will be glad to lend a hand if we need it.”
“Good to know.” Eli motioned for Rafe and Cal to precede him outside. He held up his hand for David and Emma to wait.
Through the ear piece, Emma heard the low-voiced, clipped conversation between the members of Wolf Pack. Finally, Eli said, “Clear, David.”
“Copy.” He glanced at Levi and Owen who walked in, fully armed and wearing bullet-resistant vests, then turned to Emma. “Let’s do this. I want you in the safe house as soon as possible.”
Caleb took the bags from David and turned off the kitchen light. “I’m right behind you.”
Levi and Owen stepped out onto the deck.
David tucked Emma close to his side. “Straight to the SUV, sweetheart.” When she nodded, he signaled his brothers to move out, and hurried Emma toward his vehicle.
Covering the distance to the SUV took seconds. Levi opened the passenger door, keeping his body between her and a potential threat. Caleb tossed their bags into the back.
David lifted her to the passenger seat and closed the door. After a quick word with his brothers, he climbed behind the steering wheel. “Eli, head toward the back of the smaller barn. It’s one of four access roads leading to the back of the property and away from Maple Valley. If there’s an ambush, hopefully we’ll avoid it.”
“Copy.”
The lead SUV took off with David close behind and followed by a third SUV.
“At the asphalt road, turn left,” David instructed.
Eli acknowledged his direction, then the operatives lapsed into silence.
Emma found the silence more nerve-wracking than the chatter she’d been hearing through the ear piece. “It’s too quiet now,” she murmured. The men chuckled. She wouldn’t be sharing any deep, dark secrets while connected to Wolf Pack electronically.
The vehicles traveled along the access road without interference and emerged from tree cover onto the asphalt road.
Emma breathed a sigh of relief when they traveled far enough away from Maple Valley that the likelihood of an attack seemed minimal. She glanced at David. “You were right.”
