Kissing the spot under her ear, I lace my fingers through hers and whisper in her ear, “You are my everything. I’ll never give you up. Not for money, prestige, or to please my parents. None of that means anything without you next to me.”

“I never want to be anywhere else. I love you,” she whispers.

There’s a lifetime to tell her how I feel. Tonight I focus on showing her. Worshiping her body with mine, we converse through gasps and moans. Every touch of her skin stitches the fractures in my soul caused by being away from her. When her body trembles and shakes in my arms, I follow her over the edge.

No matter what tomorrow brings, we’ll face it together.

Homecoming

Raven

My anxiety buildsthe closer we get to the airstrip. Fears that either my father or his will try and stop us from leaving cause my heart to pound painfully in my chest.

They turn out not to be unfounded. Holbrook’s phone rings, and after a short conversation he looks solemn.

“Sin, your parents are waiting by the plane. It appears they have a police detail with them. He’s managed to obtain a court order to put you back in the mental facility.”

“Turn around then,” I demand. My anxiety is becoming panic, and it’s getting hard to breathe.

Sin’s face shows no expression, and I know him well enough to believe he’s working through every move he can make to avoid being locked up again.

Holbrook looks at me in the rearview mirror. “I didn’t get where I am by not anticipating the actions of the ones I’m investigating.”

He pulls a piece of paper out of his suit jacket and passes it back to me. Opening up the tri-folded document, I see it’s got a seal embossed near a signature. I’m not very familiar with legal documents though, so I’m not sure what it means.

“It’s an injunction against any action Whitmore tries to make against Sin. He went to a state court, but this is from a federal judge. He won’t be taking Sin back.”

Agent Marks, the same one who helped bring Sin home, is at the wheel allowing Holbrook to react to any possible setbacks. He retrieves his phone again and makes a call.

“Are you at the airport?” I can hear a voice speaking, but not loud enough to make out their words. “Good, I need you to surround the governor and prevent his security team from getting near our charges.” He pauses again to listen to the other agent. “Yes, I have the injunction.”

There are two SUVs parked near the plane, one of them directly in front of it, probably to keep it from taxiing down the runway. I don’t see any of the vehicles belonging to Damien. Not that I’ve memorized them all, but it appears our clothing hasn’t arrived yet.

“Do we need to wait for our things to get here, or should we take off as soon as we get on the plane?” I ask Holbrook.

“I’ve been told your things were loaded earlier this morning. I guess Damien is only up for heartfelt goodbyes if there’s an audience.”

I can’t say I’m disappointed. It’s bad enough we’ll have to see Sin’s father, watching mine pretend to care would be a little too much for me to handle.

Our vehicle pulls through the gates of the small airstrip and stops next to the plane. Sin’s father exits the closest SUV, while his personal security detail gets out of the other one and flanks him. Carina joins him as we start to get out of our vehicle.

“Get my son in the car,” Arthur demands.

Several agents dismount the plane and step between us. “Don’t take another step,” Holbrook demands.

Arthur has a smug expression as he pulls a document similar to the one Holbrook showed me from his jacket. “I’ve got a court order mandating my son be turned over for psychiatric treatment.”

Holbrook glowers at him. “Using your political influence to trample the rights of private citizens, your own son no less, is revolting.” He retrieves the injunction from his suit jacket and unfolds it.

“As it is, I’ve already anticipated this little power play and went above your head. That’s from a federal judge and prevents you from any action against Jackson Sinclair.”

He hands over the paper. “Go ahead and keep it. I’ve got copies.”

“I’m your governor,” Arthur addresses the police he’s brought with him. “Take my son into custody.”

“I’m a federal agent. Take one step towards Mr. Sinclair, and I’ll have you arrested for violating a federal order.”

The police wisely retreat. Carina wrings her hands watching as they get back in their vehicle and pull back to the gate.
