The level of ick in Kamari’s expression is enough to make me laugh.

“C’mon, Karma. With that look, I’d assume you’re a lesbian at this point.”

“Nothing wrong with bending both ways, but I do not want to be anywhere near a football field full of sweaty, self-centered, muscular gods who love looking at themselves in the mirror more than being a decent fucking man in our female-deprived society.”

“Omega-deprived society more like it,” I mutter in agreement. “And Knox’s gym is not as big as a football field. It’s average.”

“Average, coming from one of the ‘soon-to-be’ youngest millionaire Omegas, proves I need to further raise my standards in life.” She shakes her head in dismay. “At this point, a normal pack won’t do for you.”

She claps her hands and skips to her bed. I don’t need to watch her to know where she’s going with her next statement.

“Kamar—”

“Mafia Heir. Twenty-five? Hmm. That’s even ground. A safe age gap. Can’t be a cocky bastard, but he sometimes has to remind himself and everyone around him that he can ruin everyone’s lives in a heartbeat.”

“Here we go,” I groan and proceed to get up.

“Where are you going?” She’s pouting while poking at her Kindle. “Ah! Stupid update. I need to show you this quote that would emphasize where I’m going with this.”

“I’m going to shower for my own sanity,” I declare. “I also have to do laundry. Scent-blocking panties are getting fucking expensive out here. I had to get rid of my last five pairs.”

The exaggerated gasp encourages me to look back at my horrified friend.

“F-F-F-FIVE?!” She uses her fingers as though she’s counting the death toll after a killing spree. “How much is that going to cost you?”

“When I checked yesterday’s rate, a whopping five stacks.”

I’m once again reminded why Kamari Ahvi is my best friend for life.

Despite being born into one of the wealthiest families in India and migrating to America due to the booming growth in her family’s multiple businesses, Karma still carries an appreciation and respect for money.

Every single dollar.

“Who was the culprit?”

She’s ready to kill for me.

Until I point to the evil duo.

As if sensing my accusing finger, they pause in their mischief quest to tear every ball of paper into tiny shreds, only to come racing toward me.

“Ugh, no!” I can’t even move before I’m tackled by the duo. “Blaze and Ember! Have mercy on me!”

“Woof! Woof!” I’m giggling by the time they give up on trying to give me all the licks and nudges. Running away to cause trouble elsewhere, I see Kamari’s loving smile.

“What?” I ask, noticing her quietness.

“There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t thank my goddess for providing me this opportunity to start anew,” she whispers and doesn’t hide this reflection of vulnerability she only portrays with me. “Without you… after that day… I really didn’t envision a future. The rejected Omega who dares disgrace her family.” She smiles, but it’s nowhere near gleeful.

“Society says being an Omega should be deemed a blessing. A privilege. A gift bestowed on us females that accents various qualities and attributes only we can grace to chosen men worthy of our presence.” Her words are woven so brilliantly, if I didn’t know any better, I’d believe the painted beauty in being such a rare attribute in our world. “So, why do so many of us think of it as nothing but a curse?”

I wish I could answer her, but I can’t. I’ve yet to discover my own answer to the lengthy list of questions I’ve asked for as long as I can remember.

“We can’t run away from destiny forever,” she whispers, more to herself. “Even if it’s so easy to act blind when the signs are everywhere.” She grips her Kindle to her chest and tries to hide the mask of hurt in her expression.

Even if it’s been six months, Kamari is still hurting from that day…

“If Velvet suggests you start attending these meets… do it,” she encourages, despite how she grips her Kindle with a slight tremble in her hand. “But Astraea?”
