Both of us need each other. I think we always have. And now that she’s here, now that she’s mine and hidden under my protection, some strange hope fills my soul. Eight long years have passed since I ever considered living for anything other than for revenge.

Now I have her.

Livia’s breathing evens out, and I touch the top of her head with my lips before I fall asleep.

Snapping awake, I check my phone on the nightstand. It’s mid-morning. We need to get moving, but every strand of DNA within me craves to stay in this position with her leg thrown over my stomach. I’m rock hard, too.

Briefly, I consider just sticking it inside her sleeping body, but we really should get to safety. Sosa’s associates could find us on the way to Gnarled Pine Hollow if they just stop along the highway. We could take our timegetting back, though. Maybe stop off and fuck somewhere.

Cal needs to know about us once we get back. A small knot forms in my stomach, thinking about his reaction. Will Livia be upset? She better not be. It seems she understood what happened between us last night.

She stirs, lifting her head to look at me. Her heavy-lidded champagne eyes drink me in, a little smile forming on her bubbly lips.

“Morning, foxy. You ready to head out? I’m getting nervous not having my men near us.” Pressing my lips to her forehead, I taste her amber-scented skin. “Want to get back behind our walls. We should also talk with Calum about us.”

“Sounds like you’ve been thinking a lot this morning.” Her voice is husky and sultry. Hmm, I may not be able to wait until a rest area.

“I have.” Leaning over, I tap another kiss to her straight nose. I can’t stop touching her. It’s my new drug, and I get a little zing of a high every time I do it. “Come on. I have to keep you safe. It’s what us bears do.”

Once we freshen up, we jump in the car and head to a drive-through for coffees and breakfast. On the road, memories of being on vacation with my family come to my mind. Everything is as light on the inside of me as the sun shining outside. I’m as carefree as a kid playing tag with Ace and Cal. Pumping up the radio, I start belting out a song I recognize. Livia’s warm hand is on my lap and her fingers squeeze my thighs. She giggles at my off notes. Like a girl. I reach across the car andbrush my thumb over her flushed cheek as her bright eyes follow me.

“I fucking love when you smile. And I love that you only smile for me,” I say.

Her lips spread wider, showing her white teeth. She’s even got a dimple on the left side I haven’t seen since we were little.

“How do you think Cal will respond when I tell him about us, foxy?”

She pauses for a moment, with her smile dropping slightly. “I think he’ll be fine with it.”

Just when I thought I couldn’t feel any happier, that shit just made me want to shout into the air outside. So, I do. Once I roll up the window and fix my wind-blown hair, I look at my woman. “Yeah? Well, good! I’d hate to have to kill your twin to keep you.”

She punches me in the arm, and I laugh. Grabbing her little fingers, I squeeze them in my palm, putting our hands together on my leg.

“Do you need to stop? Fuck in the rest area?” I bite my lip to keep from laughing harder at the look of irritation she sends my way. Especially when I take her hand from my leg and place it on my semi-hard cock. My hips jut up into her touch. “Or here, whichever.”

“Max!” Her eyes widen with shock as she tries to tug her hand back, but fails, then giggles madly.

“What?”

“Eyes on the road, lion. I don’t want to die in a car crash outside of… Where are we?” She gives up her fight and leaves her fingers dangling on my crotch.

“I don’t know. Some small town.” Checking the road signs, nothing has come up for a while, until I spot one that says there is food at the next exit. “Seriously, do you need to stop? Maybe we can grab some lunch. It’s been hours. I’msureyou need to pee.”

Her voice rings out in waves like a bell peeling with laughter. “Yeah. That’s fine.”

Once I pull into an old gas station and diner, I fill the Barracuda with premium and head inside where Livia has a booth seat ready for us. She sits with her eyes to the door like my clever little fox. Sliding in next to her, I toss my arm across the back, then tug on her hair on the opposite side of me.

“Ouch!” She smiles and slaps my thigh with the back of her hand.

“What do you want, little fox? Salad? Some lettuce? What do foxes eat?”

Rolling her eyes, she shakes her head, losing the grip my pinch had on her locks. “Pfft. You know I eat meat.”

“Yeah, and you do a damn fine job of it, too.” I lean over to kiss her, but she pulls back with a wide smile, her mouth open in fake shock.

“Max!”

The waitress comes over, and I order us two hamburgers and fries.
