Page 60 of Midnight Whispers
I fight against the monster within me, restraining the overwhelming thirst that builds in my gut.
Finn.
Her voice is distant, but she calls to me.
Finn.
The sound calls to me, begging me to come out of the darkness that pulls me under. Light breaks through the clouds of my mind and the gloom that obscured my vision dissolves. I withdrew my fangs from her skin, watching as the crimson runs down her thigh.
“I almost lost control. I could havekilledyou, love.”
“But you didn’t.”
“Even out of the darkest crevices of my mind, youwere able to guide me out. I am but a moth and you are the flame.” I move across the bed and settle into the bed next to her, stroking her hair as she lay in my arms.
“Is that your way of telling me you love me too?”
“I have loved you since the moment I saw you. My heart called to you in a way I have yet to experience. It wassomething I thought impossible, a myth before the day I first saw you.”
As I continued to stroke her hair, her breathing became shallow. I lay there alone with my thoughts while her chest rose and fell as she drifted deeper into a restful sleep. Knowing she’s a rather hard sleeper, it’s easy for me to maneuver my way out of beneath her and make my way into the bathroom. I wet my face to wash off the remnants of her blood off my bottom lip and chin, before wetting a washcloth so that I can clean her leg and get her dressed.
Flora and Asher return with shopping bags and a pastry box, laughing and smiling as they cross the living room.
“Where’s Lil?” Flora asks.
“Sleeping.”
“So do you guys actually never sleep?” She looks back and forth between Asher and me.
“No.” I responded.
“Nope.” Asher says at the same time.
“Weird.” She scoffs and starts unloading clothes, shoes, and a big bag of books. “I got these for her. I hope it’ll cheer her up some.”
“Please sit, Flora. We need to talk,” I clear my throat, gesturing to the spot on the couch across from me. “But Lillia can’t know until the time is right.”

I can hear talkingfrom the other side of the house. Despite knowing I fell asleep naked, I’m dressed, and it doesn’t take me long to realize that Finn must have put clothes on me after I fell asleep. My muscles ache from laying in the same spot for the better part of the last few days. The floor groans beneath me as I step off the bed and the talking stops. I exit the room, walking down the hallway and find Asher, Finn, and Flora sitting on the coaches.
“Good morning, beautiful.” Flora says with a smile.
“Everyone’s up early.Erm, I meanFlora’s up early.” Blush creeps up my neck.
“We were just talking.” Finn Responds.
“About?”
Asher clears his throat. “The Counsel and what to expect.”
“Oh,” I sat down next to Finn. “Whatshouldwe expect?”
“We were just explaining to Flora that the members of the council are very old and traditional.”
“And they already don’t like me much.”
“They’ll require Finn to replace the life he took.”
