Wait a minute.“So, you are going to arrest me?”
Winters shook his head. “No, but it’s always prudent to have a lawyer present during a police interview. As long as the security cameras out on MLK Blvd verify your original statement about the perps running away, you’ll be free to resume your beach plans later tonight. Watch your feet now, I’m gonna shut the door.” The lock clicked shut as he walked away.
Mo grabbed her phone and tapped the number for the legal department at Reardon Industries. Sure, it was late on a Friday, but someone was always working at that place.
“Reardon Industries Legal, how may I direct your call?”
Oh, thank goodness.“Becky? It’s Mo Reardon.”
“Hi hon, long time, no see. How are you doing?
I’ve been better. Mo snickered. “Pretty good. Hey, I need to speak to a lawyer. Preferably not Jason Hadley.”
“Alright. Anyone in particular?”
“Is Bennett still in?” Mo wrinkled her nose and looked around. What was that smell?
“You know, I’m not sure who’s still here. Let me walk the hallways and take a look. Is everything alright, hon?”
“Yes, fine. I just need a bit of legal advice.” Or a defense attorney.
“I’m pretty sure that I’m the last one on site, and I’m getting ready to leave. It’s supposed to be a fantastic weekend weather-wise. I know a lot of the staff signed out and headed to the mountains or the beach after lunch. Hang on a minute. Let me check a few more offices.”
“Thanks for your help.” She watched as Detective Brewster poured water in a small bowl for Hawk.
“No problem, Mo. But all the offices are dark, sweetie.”
Damn. “That’s okay. Just give me Bennett’s number, and I’ll call him.”
“I’m not allowed to give out personal numbers, hon. I’m sorry. Where are you?”
Should I? Becky’s cool. Just tell her. “In the back of a police cruiser at the moment.”
“What? Oh my gosh. Are you alright? What happened?”
“Yes, I’m okay. It’s a long story, but I need a lawyer present during an interview at the precinct in West Baltimore.” Mo shook her head. Unbelievable way to start a vacation.
“Oh. My. Word. Are you hurt?” Genuine concern laced Becky’s voice.
“No. I witnessed a crime.”
“Now, don’t you worry about a darn thing. I’ll find you a lawyer.”
“Not Hadley.” Anyone but him.
“Of course not. He’s your ex. You’re better off without him, hon. He’s a two-timing man-whore and a double-barrel prick to work for.” Becky chuckled. “I hope there isn’t audio in that ceiling camera by my desk, because I just lost my job if there is.”
“I’ve got one more favor to ask, Becky.”
“Okay, shoot.”
“Don’t tell anyone about this except Bennett. I don’t want my dad or Hadley involved at all.”
“I hear you, girl. You can tell your daddy when you’re damn good and ready. I know all about those protective parent types. I’ve got this. I’ll call you back if I can’t reach Bennett. Otherwise, you can rest assured he’s on his way. Okay, sweetie-pie?”
“Thanks, Becky. I really appreciate your help. Have a good weekend.”
“You too, bye now.”
