She peered at him over the rim of her glasses. “Yes, I am. Signed on a couple months ago. I had some healing to do after Iraq.”
Mac nodded. “What was your rank?”
Her light brown eyes locked on him like a target. “First Lieutenant, sir. Retired now.”
“It’s a privilege to work with you, Liz. Thank you.” Mac walked toward the elevator.
“The privilege is mine, Commander. You’re a legend. 273 medical saves, only lost five. You trudged through a minefield with a bomb dog to save sixteen of us until Evac could get us all out. I was one of them. Last I heard, the brass was still trying to talk you into a teaching and advisory position at the Pentagon. The least I can do is help find your Maureen.”
The corners of Mac’s lips lifted as he entered the elevator. Liz was Nick’s girl.
He thought she’d looked familiar.
