“Can we go out?”
“Do you feel up for it?”
“I do. Nay is coming to help me get ready.”
“I’ll make reservations at Pele’s Palace.”
“Yum.”
“Is six good?”
“Six is perfect.”
A knock on the door interrupted our conversation. Wrath opens the door to reveal Nay and Stormy. They’re both carrying bags.
“I brought reinforcements,” Nay says.
“Am I that bad?”
She shakes her head. “No, just more girl time.”
?
We arrive at the restaurant fifteen minutes before our reservation. One of the prospects drove the van we rented that fit my wheelchair. Once I get settled at the table, we can fold the chair and put it away. Wrath pushes my chair while Crab, formerly Bastien, opens the door. He’s tagging along with Hurl, who’s driving. It’s his first week as a prospect.
“Have a nice evening, Mrs. Jackson.”
“Thank you, Crab. You can call me Millie.”
He smiles. “Thank you, ma’am.”
We’re greeted by the head chef and co-owner, Madison Grace Kalani. Known to her friends as Maddie.
“Maddie, it’s so good to see you.”
“Millie, I’m so sorry, I haven’t been by to see you.”
I met Madison a few months ago. We hit it off as friends, but I didn’t know until recently she was connected with the club, too. She leans down and gives me a kiss on the cheek before whispering, “Congrats on your wedding, sis!”
I gasp as a memory in my head resurfaces. Aaron’s voice saying those same words before laughing like a maniac in a Bond film. Wrath immediately bends down until he’s eye level.
“Nightingale, what's wrong?”
I shake my head. “I’ll tell you as soon as we get home. That asshat is not ruining my night out.”
He looks at me for a few seconds before nodding his head.
“You deserve a night out.”
He kisses my forehead and stands up. “Lead the way, Maddie.”
Maddie glances at me. I nod. She smiles and leads us to a private dining room. It’s filled with Pink Floyd and pink Dolly Parton roses. Pink faerie lights and candles bathe the room in a soft glow. Tears prick the corners of my eyes.
“You did this for me?”
“Baby, I’d hang the moon for you.”
Maddie waits until Wrath gets me situated. A comfortable chair with a footstool so I can sit normally at the table. I’m four-twenty medicated and hungry.
