If she promised never to let go of my arm, I would do any damn thing she requested. I leaned down so she could hear my whisper, “Don’t fall for his charm, Liberty. He’s too old for you.”

“I suspect so are you,” she teased.

“Only my soul, but my body is more than willing to prove you wrong.” It was a joke. Half joke, really. Because if given the opportunity, I suspected I would most definitely not miss a chance to show her.

Her expression turned serious. “So, then, that part still works? I mean, sexually, you’re like a human?”

Ellis snorted. “The only time I’m not dead inside is when lusting after a pretty female.”

“Oh, good.” She cleared her throat. “I mean. I was wondering is all. I didn’t know if that still was a thing or if changing made it different or . . . I mean, I knew you liked to play the field, Sterling. And I guess I know that a bite is pleasurable, but I didn’t . . . Umm . . .”

Her struggle was adorable. Her pale skin taking on a bright red glow was hot. Still, I needed to save her from herself. “We operate like a man. No extra horn, no breeding knots, no incubation period, nothing crazy and out of the normal.”

“Oh.” I couldn’t tell if that was relief or disappointment.

Mr. Collin’s gestured for us all to sit, and we did. “I see by now, you have read through Mr. Hatter’s information he provided you, and I see there are no ill feelings toward his heir. I would wait until tomorrow, but while you are here, Liberty, I have a few papers I would like you to sign.”

Next to me, Liberty’s body tensed, and she nodded. Mr. Collins continued, “I’m sure by now, you have put the pieces together. Mr. Hatter – James, trusted you all with what was most important to him. His bloodline. The last remaining descendant of him and his wife, Sarah.”

“I fucking knew it,” Oak exclaimed, and all eyes turned to him. “What. They were like fucking twins.”

Mr. Collins’ voice grew louder as he tried to talk over Oak. “He asked that it be made clear, in case there was any confusion. As the last and only remaining of Greta’s blood descendants, you have the power to stop her. He’s never asked much of you three. He’s guided you, he’s loved you, and now he asks you to do the same. Protect her, protect Liberty. Greta is coming for her, and only you can stop her.”
