He cleared his throat, but it was still rough with sleep and desire. “Not in this lifetime.”
She bounced off the bed, taking both our hands with her as she pulled. “Good. Go to Roth, and I’ll wait.”
She was being suspiciously compliant. “You’re cooperating.”
I probably didn’t need to point that out, but also, I wanted her to know that although she had a hundred and ten percent of my lust, I did not completely trust her. She licked her lips, and my eyes followed. “Well, I’m hoping we can find him sooner than later.”
“Is that all you have planned?”
She held up her fingers. “Girl scout’s honor.”
Only every fucking one of us knew Bella never was and—based on the way her tongue glided so skillfully over my cock—never would be a fucking girl scout.
Chapter 33
BOYCE
“I fucking knewit was suspicious, but he didn’t fucking listen,” Roth said with a growl, his anger radiating in waves toward us.
Did Silas ever fucking listen?
“So he contacted you then?” Vince summarized, and I could see the relief. If he contacted Roth, that meant there was a starting point. Silas would’ve at least told him where the meetup was as a precaution.
“I told him not to fucking go alone, but you know Silas always does what he wants.” Oh yeah, we knew. “Let me get my subpack on the line, see who I can get to come with us to San Francisco. We’ll take two trucks. Go pack your equipment, and I’ll call within the hour.”
It was a dismissal, an order, an unrefusable demand. When he turned his back toward us, we knew he was done. His orders had been issued, now his mind was set on the problem and solving the situation, not on how the situation had come about.
Vince turned on his heels, heading out of the room, and like a pup, I trailed after him. It was hard to break the habit of being the tail when you spent your entire existence in the subpack being the runt, the baby of the pack. But in situations like these, when shit was getting real, I gladly let Vince take control and just lent my support when needed.
When we got to the truck and he slammed the door, closing himself into the driver’s seat, he said, “Bella will not like that we’re leaving.”
Fuck, I wished I could volunteer to stay. I wanted to stay. I wanted to curl up next to her and absorb all her sorrows and worry until Silas was home. Because he would be home, of that I was sure. This morning, with her body plastered against mine and snuggled so tightly between Vince and me on his bed, was like a dream. I’d had to pinch myself just to make sure I hadn’t been dreaming. She felt right, and now that I knew she was our mate, that she’d been our mate this whole time, I fucking craved her. All the feelings I’d felt since that very first kiss years ago roared back to life, begging me to take what was mine.
“She won’t have a choice,” I finally answered. “She can’t come along.”
He chuckled. “I don’t doubt she’ll try.”
I didn’t doubt it either. She was as stubborn as they came, which was probably why she was constantly butting heads with Silas. Damn if I wasn’t looking forward to a lifetime of arguments between the two. She would put him in his place a thousand times over, and I couldn’t wait to see his face every damn time that it happened.
“Who’s going to tell? Because I sure as fuck don’t want to volunteer.”
Vince looked at me as he started the truck. “I’ll do it. You’re such a fucking pussy. Should have been born a cat.”
“Name call all you want, but at the end of the day, it’s you she will sink those angry claws into.”
“Yeah, as I’m fucking her against the wall.” He smirked, and damnit, he had me because I didn’t for once think about the words that left my mouth.
“You’re a crude fucker,” I replied as he pulled off onto the main road.
Another smirk took over. “I fuck her.”
I fought the urge not to pull a Bella and roll my eyes “You’re fucking impossible.”
“Impossibly large.”
Eww. “Fucking stop. This isn’t about you and your cock and its ability.” Though I knew he was only trying to distract himself from worrying. “How were we on supplies during the last post trip inventory?”
His knuckles tightened on the steering wheel. “For a normal extraction, we were fine on supplies. But I’m not so sure this will be normal. If something took down Silas, it’s going to take a whole fucking lot to keep him down, which means we might be up against more than we thought.”
