"Elliot, would you like to meet your grandparents?" Cathy said to the boy.
I looked at her wide-eyed and felt warm in my chest because she had taken the initiative.
"Yes!" shouted my son, letting go of control and jumping for joy. "When are we going?" he asked.
"Right now," she replied, looking me straight in the eyes.
I couldn't help but smile and took her hand, entwining it with mine as Elliot ran to his room.
"Thank you for everything you did just now," Cathy said. "And I know maybe Eric had already thought of it, but we're planning to get married, and I'd like you to be best man at the wedding. I owe you my life as much as I owe Eric."
Andrew set the controller aside and stood up from the couch with his chest puffed out and a smile that was hard to disguise. "I'd be honored," he answered.
I helped Cathy pack some clothes and for Elliot too, even though I insisted it wasn't necessary and left for the mansion. Andrew with Elliot went together in Andrew’s car so they could continue their video game conversation because if anyone was a video game geek, it was Andrew.
Cathy and I went in my car and spent the trip enjoying the view and the road, knowing that soon we'd call each other husband and wife.
"Thank you for giving this to me. I really wanted my parents to meet our son," I said.
"After watching my life flash before my eyes, I realized I can't keep dragging things out, Eric, I want to be with you, and I want us to be a family," she confessed, and it was the first time there was no hesitation in her voice.
I wanted to hug her and shower her with kisses, but I had to keep my eyes on the road. And after a couple of hours and avoiding the crowded streets, we arrived at the mansion.
My mother was outside watering some flowers, and my father was next to her, smoking a pipe. They both looked at my car and furrowed their brows since I had told them I would not be back this week.
They kept their eyes on the car, and then they saw Cathy. My mother stopped watering the plants and walked toward us with quick steps as my father walked slowly.
"Cathy, we missed you so much here," she said. "Every day, I ask Eric about you and Elliot." my mom looked inside the car, but the light in her eyes dimmed a little as she saw that Elliot wasn't there.
"I missed you so much too." Cathy hugged my mother, and then my father kissed her hand as soon as he arrived. "I have a surprise for you.” Cathy smiled and pointed toward Andrew's car.
They turned in time to see Elliot get out and walk toward us.
"Son, these are your grandparents," I said, grabbing him by the hand and pulling him closer to my parents.
My mother put her hands over her mouth and looked at me with wide eyes as my father was almost in a state of shock.
"He looks just like you at that age," my mother said with longing in her voice. "Oh, goodness. Little angel, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Elliot looked a little chagrined at first, but after a while, he opened up to his grandparents, who took ownership of him and took him for a walk around the mansion while my mom stuffed him with sweets.
"I've never seen my mother this happy," I commented to Cathy and Andrew, who stood beside me, watching my parents forget about everything else and focus on little Elliot.
"Your mother wasn't going to be at peace until you gave her a grandchild," Andrew said. "You just made her the happiest woman in the world."
Cathy squeezed my hand and leaned back to me, breathing softly as we walked to them.
"Mom, Dad..." I cleared my throat to get their attention. They turned to us, I felt pride in my chest, and the smile on my face gave away my excitement. "Cathy and I are planning to get married."
"Eric, you just gave me the best two gifts in the entire world," my mother said, tousling my son's hair. "I'm so happy for you two."
My father was a serious man who didn’t show his emotions so easily. In fact, he made a joke out of everything, but this time he just smiled and patted me on the back. "Then we'd better get that wedding set up as soon as possible," he said.
Elliot still didn't quite understand what was going on and was more focused on eating the sweets his grandmother was giving him.
We went inside the mansion to discuss the details, but my mother insisted that she and my father would take care of everything so we could focus on planning our honeymoon. She made it very clear that she would take care of Elliot and wouldn't take no for an answer.
