Rejected me. I sighed, too.
“I knew what you were the moment you walked into my diner.”
My eyes bulged. “You never said anything, and how on earth did you know? I didn’t even know until a hunter showed up to kill me.”
Macy nibbled her lower lip. “Sometimes, I know things about people without them having to tell me.”
“Like a psychic?” My little snort turned into giggles, but when Macy just stared at me straight-faced, my amusement faded. “Holy shit, you’re really a psychic?” Of course, she was. There were vampires, shifters, and fairies. Why wouldn’t psychics be a thing?
“A witch with clairvoyant tendencies, actually. I say tendencies because my abilities are a bit…shaky. I’m only half-witch, not as strong as most.”
I gawked at her. I would never have imagined.
“I never said anything to you because I wasn’t sure if you knew what you were when we met. Like I said, my abilities aren’t one hundred percent reliable. If you didn’t know, I wanted to protect you from the supernatural world.”
“That’s why you were so adamant about me not working nights at the diner,” I concluded.
Macy sighed. “I didn’t want you around our kind.”
I quirked an eyebrow. “You’re not a shifter or…any other creature.”
“But I would be thrown into the category of ‘freaks of nature,’ and a hunter would still want my head.”
Scrubbing a hand over my face, I let out a laugh. “A witch. Wow, that’s…”
“A pain in the ass.”
I scoffed. “I was going to say awesome.”
She rolled her eyes. “You and I have a lot in common, Syd. My people frown upon half-breeds too.”
The sadness in her voice was something I’d never heard from the always-sunny Macy. The room went so quiet that even Dominic glanced our way with a frown.
“I wish I’d known all of this before,” I said. Perhaps we could have comforted each other.
She shrugged. “Cole told me everything the night after the hunters attacked you.”
“He visited you?” Logically, I knew Macy was a true friend, but jealousy still reared its head.
With a knowing smirk, she explained, “Only to give me a heads up about hunters being in town. He wanted me to watch my back and warn my customers.”
“Oh. Not to sound like the jealous monster, but I get the impression your relationship with the Moon Guardians’ Alpha goes further than professional. I know you help him out sometimes—”
“With certain shifter business,” Macy clarified.
“But you guys seem close, and the others seem to know a lot about you, too. Why is that?”
Macy pulled in a shaky breath.
The chair Dominic occupied scraped on the hardwood when he jumped up. “You know what, it sounds like things are going to get too personal. I’m going to wait outside.”
“You don’t have to,” I said. “We’re not discussing any deep dark secrets here, Nic.”
He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced at Macy with a frown. “I’m still going to go.”
I stared at him as he hurried to the door and disappeared. “What the hell was that about?”
Macy’s lips twisted into a wry smile. “He probably doesn’t want to hear about the kind of asshole his friend is.”
